Thread: My Idea for what Commando should really be.

I am a Ranger, and I have an idea for a future Commmando Revamp...
What are Commandos in real life?
They are a special unit, able to survive on there own in harsh environments, and are extremely skilled in killing. Are used to infiltrate and dystroy important enemy structures, defences, command and control sites whithin Enemy territory.
They slip in dystroy target....slip out. And the enemy has no idea what hit them
So...
Why not have commandos take missions against NPC targets, they can speak with a high ranking Officer of there faction...who can give them missions, and payouts.
An example follows:
Mission: Dystroy Imperial communication Post On Corellia, that is suspected of spying on the Rebel Hidden Base.
The Base will be heavily defended by AT-ST's, elite Novatroopers, and lots of Stormtroopers. Any normal attack on this site would result in massive casualties, and alert the Empire of the Alliances Knowledge of the Base, and the Empire will either have a Drop Ship full of goodies like **AT-AT's*** (hopefully) and lots of Novatroopers. If any combatant in this "hot-zone" is spotted by the enemy it will set off the alarm, the reinforcments will arrive, and the Commandos will fail there mission (this is to discourge non-commandos ie.Jedi, from comming and and doing the mission for the commandos.)
So stealth and precision is the Key. Commandos who group up will get a new ability to communicate between themselves. So they can execute a plan. Like Rangers they will be able to conceal themselves, and unleash there furry and take out the post. If they fail, they will have the full front of the Empire on there backs...and will fail the mission.
Air Strike: Certain missions will require the Commandos to sneak into the base, set an airstrike beacon, and get out before the pay-load hits.
For the Empire... TIE bombers will come screaming in and unleash a hellfire of bombs onto the sight...killing everything.
For the Alliance... Y-Wing Bombers will come rushing in high in the sky and drop there bombs on the target killing everything.
Of course this will require alot of programming time, and will probably never happen. But what a rush it would be to see TIE Bombers screaming over the mountains bombing the crap out of a sight, then returning to the Star Dystroyers orbiting the Planet.
New weapon:
Ion Cannon: this powerful weapon, will emite a powerful blast of Electricly charged ions, that will render any vehicle immobile for 30 seconds, and malfunction any ranged weapon for 30 seconds. However this weapon cannot harm people, and the commando is vulverable to melee attacks.

Well, here's where I disagree. I say leave stealth and covert ops to the rangers, and let the commandos have their fun blowing crap up on the battlefield. We're a high-energy blast-them-to-pieces type. After all, we are the one class that gets the biggest guns, we deserve recognition in war as the guys and girls who hit like mack trucks with rockets, lightning, acid, and flame. Not overpowered or unbalanced, but we use heavy weapons, and we should fight like we have heavy weapons. Why use stealth when you're hefting a big flamethrower or a bazooka?
The scenario I always envisioned for a commando:
The stormtroopers quickly make their way to the entrance of the ship they just captured, ready to blast the door open. Suddenly, a massive explosion hits the door from the other side, sending shrapnel into their helmets and through their armor. Through the smoke, a stream of liquid flame ejects and sears several more of the unfortunate soldiers. Moments later, a river of acid follows, burning and melting whats left of the decimated squadron. When the smoke settles, 3 brave commandos prepare to blow everything to kingdom come and plow through anything in their way.
kind of corny, but I think it sounds more like what the commando really is: The power hitters and the one-man artilleries.

realalisticly(and in the SW univerese), Commandos are the masters of stealth and destruction. The first post is the closest to what a true commando is. Sure, yours works, but the stealth and subterfuge is a big part as well.
For another example, think of Splinter Cell. That captures the stealth part of it, just lacks a bit on the chaos and destruction.
