I just hit novice commando today. I'm going to be master commando/smuggler. Anyway, i'm about to go shopping for an LP to get myself started. Before i do, is it still a cool idea to go a few blocks into the flamethrower tree before i even try it or can i start with the flamethrower? What are the stats on a good LP these days?

Any other adivce would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Use the LP until you have Flame 3, at least. Before Flame 3, you won't be able to hit much of anything with a flamer.

As far as good LP stats, I dunno; I haven't checked lately. Mine does 309 max damage, I remember, sliced (but I think it was a speed slice...just can't recall the speed).
