Give up on the Grenades entirely, they are completely a waste of time.
In fact the time it takes for you to thropw one of the crappy items they laughingly call a grenade you can do more damage with the FT.
So don't carry them or even use them. Just use the Flame Thrower for Heavy Weapons exp.

Well i don't know about giving up on them entirly. IF you can find a good weponsmith that will make you quality grenades for a decent price then, once you get higher in the field tactics line there are some nice grenades out there. Check this link for some good info from a smith.

But i wouldn't worry about tossing grenades atm, you will miss a lot and waste time and money. Also if you are within the blast radius of the grenade you will take damage. Which you noticed
Hope this helps

Use em.
They give you solid combat xp.
just target a wild gurk nest and lob protons - nothing beats it. You can earn 300k of combat xp in 3 nest.

Grenades are decent in large group situations with targets bunched up. PvP or PvE. They are slow and you miss a lot, but under the right circumstances I found them to be useful.
The trick to them in PvE is: never use them unless you have a tank drawing the attacks from your target. That way your target won't start advancing on you the instant you start throwing. 99% of the time I've gotten caught in my own blast radius, it was the target aggroing me and moving too close that caused it. I used to use low-level pets when I was leveling, but their power was long ago nerfed, so you basically need a player now.
Brawlers, in particular, can "taunt" an enemy that has also ready aggroed you and draw it away (to attack the brawler)...it is basically what Ranger's "Rescue" is supposed to be....except it's a Novice Brawler skill.
In PvP you don't need a tank, as players do not automatically move in your direction when you start to throw (and mobs do).
