Thread: Some things to remember with the CU

To begin, the forums are messed up with Mozilla Firefox. We finally get a graphical editor, but the post button doesn't work! And unfortunately IE doesn't work for me anymore - for now Im temperory using Opera, so I may not be posting a whole lot (but thankfully PM's and reading your posts works with Firefox!)

Some tips to remember:

  • Kill things blue/white/yellow con for xp - grey cons are too easy of a challenge (or should be) and give 1 xp. Blue cons should give about 4.5k xp (generally 1-3 levels below you), white cons (even level) give approx 5k xp, and +1 yellow cons give around 5.1k xp.

  • Use your specials wisely - For example, killing CL 73 critters on Dathomir, I barely can get touched if I use combos with KD effects, Rooting shots, Slowing Shots, Stun shots, etc - our weapons are great for making better combos too. Remember the CU depends on your template and your strategy in bringing down creatures, use armour if you feel you need more protection as well as Stim E's (CL 60 requirement) or Stim D's (I believe CL 80).

  • Also - Combat xp is in your COMBAT spam now!

  • Don't forget about our AoE - Its not healthy dragging all your lair's mobs on you at once! Also, currently it seems non-commando weapons with cone/AoE specials give full (or close to it, since combat spam is now abbreviated and gives only resisted damage) Aoe splash damage, while our's *still* does 10% base/100% elemental (it seemed to have been a fluke on TC-Ep3 when it was discovered that we got 100% AoE damage). Im still working on this, and along with other AoE issues its on our very top concerns

  • Group! A single solo lair gives around 20-30k experience it seems (if around your level). If you group, you can get MUCH more xp as the number of folks RAISES the mob quantity. You might be able to get 75-100k+ xp from a single mission in a group of 8, and thats without the double xp...

  • Once again - remember its not so much who does the most damage fastest, but who has the better versitility in terms of skills! Commandoes do "heavy" damage via DoTs and AoE (along with certain state effects) - use that to your advantage! There is no more a single best special to use. Although it may seem that things have been nerfed, they havent! Remember CL80 mobs -only- seem to have 7,500 ham! And if you're the same level, they can easily be taken out solo with a little strategy rather than mindless spamming. So when you do 1700 damage with a Flamethrower (but do half that -after- resists, which is currently only showing up in combat spam....it seems most mobs have around 30-50% armour). Thats 11.3% of the target's ham PER shot. However, that will signficantly make your action dwindle - so use KD shots, stun shots, etc...make your target suffer!

Go to your options to disable the wysiwyg editor to get back to the old behaviour, the submit button then works with firefox :-P.

So far I am impressed with the CU. I will do my best to find any issues with the commando line and report back. For the first time in almost a year I am enjoying my profession again. Now I remember why I first picked up a flame thrower. As StarNick's signature says We are the few, the proud. Now lets gear up and go show this CU what we are made of.

Have to agree on the using your specials wisely. Master commando master pistoleer here. Better to lay states earlier in the fight, go to default attack of ranged attack to let your action recharge until they get weak. Then let loose with your power shots. That would be advanced quick draw for pistoleer. Man i love that special, cuts delay in half.

I love commando now. it was such a hard grind before the CU. I think the best template is master commando, master rifleman, 0004 pistoleer so you can get stopping and fan shot. I must say that the Devs did a WONDERFUL job on the ranged professions. it actually looks like Star Wars with shoot-out style fights in PvE now.

The one thing I am still looking for with commando is where to get my proton rifle, any ideas?

Thanks much, I got screwed by the respec so I need to grind everything except Grenades 1 and Incendiary 4.

Now if only I could find a weaponsmith stocking normal flamethrowers...

Which is the best weapon to grind Commando when at my level?

Just as a suggestion, I personally prefer the heavy beam weapons tree to incendiary for grinding. I respecced to MBH -Commando 0400 and the Heavy Lightning Beam Cannon is awesome for grinding with.

It has decent range, wide area of effect, decent damage, and a potential fire DoT. Only thing that seems to be making grinding harder is that group chat isn't working (at least it wasnt' on Corbantis earlier).

Its a funny thought, now...the shackles are broken for our profession in terms of XP and versitility (in terms of useful weapons). But at the same time, most of the professions out there that enjoyed a sense of uberness (either due to FOTM nature, or 80% Armour/buffage with their own defenses - which *were* higher than a commando's), now are getting a taste of what it was like to be a commando after our golden age. To a degree, all of us had to use a sense of strategy to survive both PvE and PvP, so of the folks who I think are adapting better are the professions that were sorely gimped before the CU...

On another note - thanks, got firefox working again for me! Yay
