Using a flamethrower, and since you are granged no specials anywhere in the commando tree I'm using BH specials with commando, but I don't see any indication that the target is experiencing any type of flame DOT.

Am I missing something?

Read your combat scroll, it's there. For me, it shows up as a goldish-yellow line...usually something like

'Fobu Newbie (An Imperial Medic) takes 255 points of fire damage from Eyini Resresit'

***Eyini Resresit***

Master Smuggler

The Black Widows

An Underworld Player Association

Sunrunner

Save your local smugglers, kill a jedi.

That and you can now visibly see the target on fire. It's a pretty neat animation.

They think that we all wanted to be Luke and Han, but they are wrong. We all wanted to be our own person in the Star Wars Galaxy and do things WITH Luke and Han, not AS Luke and Han. There is a big difference and they just don't get that....

Hmmm, I didn't get that when I was killing rogue Famba's or whatever you call them on Corellia, is it possible that it only works with some specials or something?
