I was browsing threw random vendors today and came across a flamthrower that seemed to have good stats. I was wondering if I could get a quick apraisal here, thanks. Stats are as follows: speed 4.8, damage 517-1004.

That's pretty average. You can get flamethrowers that have 4.3 speed and slice them so that their max becomes around 1100. If your weaponsmith has a lot of experimentation points, tell him to put most of them into damage, then get a good damage slice and you could be at 1200+ max damage easily. Basically you sacrifice speed for damage, but damage is much more important thatn speed post patch, imo anyways.

oh unless it wasnt sliced already, then its pretty good. With a lucky damage slice you could get a very nice ft.

It's most likely pre-sliced (in which case it is a poor Flamethrower).

The same stat that increases damage also reduces speed. So a WS has no choice in making a "fast" weapon" versus a "highly damaging" one.
That said, so long as speed woks the way it currently does (and unless you hit that 1 second speed cap...though pretty much only the guy with that Legendary flame thrower has to worry about that) you'll get more dps with a faster flame thrower than a high-damage one. (More precisely put, if you take a given flame thrower, a 1% speed increase is better on a dps basis than a 1% damage increase.

Damage is more important than speed in pvsp right now, as you usually only get one shot off. The dot is 10% of the initial damage, so if you want it to tick for anything halfway decent youll need a damage oriented flamethrower. Of course im referring to group pvsp, where the large initial strike and dot will help your group out after you inevitably succumb to the commandos terrible defenses. My advice for one on one pvsp is dont unless your opponent is unarmored. In that case you will one hit him anyways 90% of the time, so speed does not matter in that situation either
Also, are you sure that to increase damage you must also increase speed? I know that in a t21, if you want the most damage the speed and ham will be high, and I assumed this was the case for all weapons.
