First off...welcome!!!

Second...yes, as the previous posted mentioned, Pistol mods and specials work with the Launcher Pistol...the big difference is that instead of giving Pistol XP, the LP gives Heavy Weapon XP...this makes it a good early Commando grinding tool...use /healthshot1 (from Marksman) with the LP...and if you really want some good assistance with your grind, temporarily pick up Novice Pistoleer for /healthshot2...A lot of Commandos go that route and then drop the Novice Pistoleer as soon as they hit Flame 3 (you'll only want to use your FT from that point on pretty much)....Other Commandos decide to keep Pistoleer as it gives us some very useful specials and mods for the LP plus has nice defenses...

I would suggest some BH skills, for pistols, great attacks in pistols with a blast type weapon, and the +10 to both accuracy and speed, commando as far as I know has no upgrades for the pistol.

I agree, but it depends on how much you plan on using the LP in the future. With M. Commando, I can't see many reasons you'd want to use the LP over the FT (though there might be a couple). It's all about skill points. You could go M.Commando, BH Pistol 4 (accuracy + speed + eyeshot), & TKA 0/3/0/4 (good defenese). On the other hand, you could instead go M. Commando, Pistoleer 0/3/4/4 (accuracy + defenses + stopping shot & fan shot), TKA 0/4/0/4 (even better defenses), and spend your last skill point on a FS Skill. Granted, some of your defenses will only take affect when unarmmed, but if you ever get in trouble just unequip your LP/FT and throw on CoB and you'll be amazed how quickly the damage stops.

Well yeah I am 4000 at the moment. What i need to know relates to the launcher pistol - does pistol speed increase the speed on this weapon as well? Would it for instance be good to pick up the speed tree from Pistoleer or BH ?

Damn if those grenades speed problem got sorted they would so be my weapon of choice. I love tossing a grenade at a lair of quenkers while my pet tanks

Welcome to the community, I'm not much older than you. :-) Yes, pistol speed mods apply. About the grenades...

I LOVE throwing grenades!! I'm only sorry that old /throwGrenade command doesn't seem to work at all, or I'ld add it in a macro. Grenades probably aren't that practical for PvP...at least not outdoors! Think strategically: use your grenades with /suppressionfire1, or knockdown effects to buffer the slower speed. Don't use them in open terrain where enemies are highly mobile. The best use for Grenades is indoors in hallways and small rooms where spaces are confined and an enemy can be pinned in by overwhelming fire from your teammates. Also, use them to finish the job, not start it. Your formula for grenade use should be: immobilize, demoralize (intimidate, etc) disorient (forcing them into cover or using blinding attacks, then /aim and throw. Great for a 3 or 4 line macro for use indoors!
