With all consumable weapons, you have to use them from your inventory (select use on the radial menu while targetting something)or a hotbar (just click it.) Unfortunately, this means that there is no way you can tell how accurate your shot will be until after you fire. Make sure you crouch to gain accuracy as well.

I figured this out the hard way on my own. I have all my weapons on the F keys, I had my target and was changing weapons to figure out which had the best chance of defeating it by star color. Then I pressed the F key for the rocket launcher. Imagine my surprise when it launched one instead on equipping it. After running like the wind only to be killed, I learned how to use it properly.

Exactly what Raptor said.

You can only "use" them, not eqip them. So when you have targeted something, select the RocketLauncher from your inventory, and click on the use option.

Or drag the rocket launcher to your hotbar, and just hit the corresponding function key (F1-F12).

you dont equip a rocket launcher you put it as a hot key target a creature or NPC and press the hot key you assigned the rocket launcher to.... Ive used em before
