When being in the military myselfI watched a drill today from one of the dutch military (Koninklijke Landmacht) a Mortar group at work.. The idea hit me this would be a great weapon in the Galatic Civil war and who's better then arm one then a Commando? First some inside information:
"mortar is a smoothbore, Muzzle-loading arttilaypiece that firesindirect shelves at low velocities, short ranges, and high-arcingBallistic trajectories. These attributes contrast with the mortar's larger siblings,rifled howitzers and Field Guns, which fire at higher velocities, longer ranges, and flatter arcs. Typically a modern mortar consists of a tube into which is dropped a mortar shell (bomb) onto a firing pin resulting in the detonation of the propellant and the firing of the shell."
Won't this make a superb way for the commando to actually be able to assist in the GCW in a more present way? It should have a long range and have a area attack of sort where the shelf lands. Even perhaps require a commando and a second player to make it work?
Most modern mortar systems consist of three main components: a tube or barrel, a base plate, and a bipod. Ammunition for mortar systems generally come in two main varieties: fin-stabilized and spin-stabilized. The former have short fins on their posterior portion that control their path in flight. The latter use rotational spin (similar to a thrown in american football) to balance and control the mortar shell. These rounds can either be illumination, smoke, or high explosive.
Several possibilities as you can see for different shelves used, they can start smokescreens to give the troops a safe retreat or a stealth attack, high explosives that do damage on a area and so much more. A shell that stops speeders from moving. The way of attacking should be rough, anyone remember that small game with to cannons shooting at eachother at turns? Moving the barrel and power to determine how far it will go, That way this weapon will be hard to use yet the results could be devastating... Or based like you put a house down, mark an area in wich it would land.. plenty of options!

i like it! it would probaby be easier to implementif it targeted a single player, who is hopefullynear alot of others.

Not if we make it a 100/200 meter range, it should do massive damage but hard to aim. Its a form of artillery and needs at leats one more player to be fired.
Might even use 3. A Gunner, a loader and a scout who can pinpoint a location as firecontrol?

LMAO 100-200 range .... i can hear Jedi crying already .... although i do like this idea ..

im loving this idea and jerfs can take there sabers and.... but i think this could add a real fun aspect of the game using the commando to set and arm the mortar and mabey a ranger or sl to pinpoint a target location
