Thread: PvP'ing commando's: more input needed :)
Rule 1: Pair it with a Melee class
Commando is primarily a close quarters ranged profession (w-t-f?!) with no significant state defenses. You will need to pick something up to get them, and TKA is the best choice as it leaves you with just enough SP for novice medic. TKA also gives you a knockdown/dizzy attack which is VITAL to fighting melee professions up close. Otherwise, I suggest fencer, it won't leave you the SP for novice medic, but, it is currently the best defensive template in the game, and can hold its own in a pinch in PvP due to it's stun damage weapon.
Rule 2: Accuracy...
Commando is NOT an accurate profession. We miss a LOT. The best thing you can do for this is to get weapons experimented on for ACCURACY. Also, if applicable get your weapon stocked. Always keep in mind, you can have a 780-1400 flamer, but if you don't make contact, it's worthless. This is especially a problem against defense stackers.
Rule 3: Think out your tactics
I know it's much easier to fun in there FT ablaze and hope you hit something, but I can say from experience, this usually doesn't work (actually, it only worked for me once or twice... and that was durring the "good ol' days" of BIG ticks). The unfortunate fact of the matter is that to be effective Commando, you need to first be effective with your paired melee profession. Your first priority is to disable your opponant, as you will be completely vulnerable for at least 8 seconds after you shoot off your flamethrower, so try to knock them down and stick a dizzy first. Then worry about blasting the crap out of them with your commando weapons/skills.
I haven't done much PvPing as a commando since shortly after we gotten beaten so mercilessly with the nerf bat, and I haven't PvPed much lately at all, but this stuff used to work for me, and still works for other people. Just keep these 3 points in mind, and you'll at least have a better chance. Also remember that Commando is only 169 of your 250 skill points, the other 81 are there to do with as you choose, and how you choose to use them DOES affect the way your Commando skills will play.
Here's the stats on my HAR
4.4 speed
343 min
755 max
wound 41.8%
point blank +16 at 0m
ideal +74 at 35m
-115 at 64m
I actually use my HAR in PVP taken with cutros snow cake. Its my secondary weapon after I get a good burn I use the HAR and hit with some nice accuracy.

Well. good luck. Im glad your not on my server cause its always sad to see a commando walk around and try.
btw, if I were to face a melee'er I'd do my best to stay out of melee range
Again, good luck. Your best attack is within 16m which is withing lunge range and anything else you fire wether its the FT outside ideal range or a HW doesnt stand much of a chance against anyone with decent defenses.
The whole idea of how I want to play commando in pvp is based on consumables/grenades, but as they aren't easy to find anyhow it's very though for me to get info on what is^possible
Consumables/grenades = hurt yourself more than anyone else.
I will make it work...yes I will
Good attitude but if you do, you are passing up many great commando befor you.
Good luck.

Techno no offense, but try not to be a smartass. Its quite obvious the profession is broken.

well, I told myself not to go out alone anymoremy guild pvp's a lot and they are mostly melee'ers (and a speedcapped carbineer
)
I can't take up a melee prof as backup though...only pistol tech IV for defenses....I have some very different ideas on how to fight with commando...I'll make sure to fill you guys in once I've tried it
Thanks for all the input

Yeah Sly I don't think people think should expect commando's to do things themselves. In my opinion, I've been told otherwise haha, we're the heavy weapons guys doing damage going first followed by melee, or behind melee shooting for damage. I don't know the second one seems to make more sense but most people fighting don't seem to go in first so I do it lol.
I find we work great in pvp groups. As a commando you should be covert and then attack the tef'd
Burning people with a 250 tick or shooting people with 400-600 dmg heavy weapons that can hit (better with citrus food) is not something they want if they are 1. Not a def stacker, or 2. a doc.

Your right, I did sound like a smart ass and Im sorry.
Truth is, Ive tryed many combat professions and just recently got back TKM and was thinking maybe Ill go back to commando. The reason why is, as long as I have been gone, and after trying every other combat profession, the only combat profession I could see myself reclaim master after a grind is Commando.
I love this profession and any othr combat profession and I think Ill throw up if I try to grind em again.
