This is intended to be a post for the benefit of everyone because Iam telling youthis is a dead end profession and you are just going to be miserable if you try and pursue it:

1) Fixing the weapons won't make the commando competitive.

2) Everything about the commando needs a rework.

3) The rework will not happen within the next 6 months because it just too massive.

1) Even if they fix the weapons certs that is still not going to make commandos an effectual combat class. Even if they fix the weapons certs and double the damage on the weapons that still will not make the commando an effectual class. Lets say your flamethrower does 40-400 damage 4.0 speed. That is random damage to the targets HAM. It also has no bonus modifiers like any of the specialist classes have (IE Rifle, Carbine, Pistol). Basically if they fixed all the weapons and made them twice as powerful which theymost likelywon't, all you will end up with is an ability to use 5 different mediocre weapons with no bonuses to any other modifiers like say a carbineer, pistoleeror rifleman will have (Let alone Bounty Hunter). A rifleman with the 2 blocks that give mindshot2 and headshot3 is better then a master commando will ever have the potential to be. Basically each elite weapons profession of all types, when reaching the master skill, gives the ability for 1 shot kills or very close. Most elite weapons professions let you 1 shot (or at least kill your target before they can respond) within 5 seconds, with the advantage going to the attacker. The devs probably aren't going to nerf the basic elite professions since they are the core of the game - but also have showed a proprensity not to "power-up" anything andprobably aren't going to give a commando the same insta/quickkill abilities that the other professions have.

2) The whole class needs a rework. That means there needs to be additional bonuses (IE ranged defense +5, melee defense +5) etc. Again as it stands the bonuses that the other master elite weapons professions get COMPLETELY outweigh what a Master commando would be if they fixed all the weapons and made them all do 400-800 4.0 speed. A Master commando would have a very hard time hitting them with their +ranged defense etc. and would get completely destroyed for his/her lack of defensive and offensive modifiers. Also grenades are never going to be worth anything. Take a master commando and superpowerful grenades. In the amount of time to use a grenade on someone, they will just eyeshot you or headshot3 you and it's over (especially because they will hit you more often because of your lack of defense modifiers). Why spend money on a grenade when every other class has uberweapons and skills that don't cost anything. Any weapon with charges for that matter. And believe me they aren't going to make 1 shot or close commando weapons. While it would balance things out, it just "sounds" unfair and thus won't happen.

3) This is not going to happen for a long time. I am a programmer but I know that probably none of us can understand the complexity of a game such as this. In my mind when I think of the Launcher Pistol fix for instance, it seems like it is a mixed up constant, like LauncherPistolSkillType = pistol. Obviously if it was like that they would just fix it in 1 second. If this code is so complicated that they can't immediatelyfix what weapons skill type a particular weapon draws from in 3 weeks (they must have known about it for three weeks), do you honestly think they will be able to completely rework an entire skillbox to make this skill tree worth anything in a reasonable amount of time?

In conclusion ...

I am usually not a very nice player in games. I am an ends over means type of person and when I get good enough to start PvPing this will show. Howeverwarning people of thegrief that waiting for this profession will cause people is my good deed for the duration of the game. This profession is not going to be viable for at least 2-3 months no matter what you think. You are just wasting your time in a hopeless bet. Maybe the devs will make this class really good within a couple patches, because it is called COMMANDO for heavens sake, and then I willinstantly be very powerful!- Nope. Sure you can come up with a lot of creative ideas. You can even solve the entire mystery and invent the perfect way for everything to balance out. But I know that you know somewhere in your mind that it doesn't matter and you are just wasting your time because your solution will not be implemented. Trust me, cut your loss. I personallyam veryupset about losing the40,000combat exp points. They are sooooo hard to get - and I could have used them in my other elite profession!Ican't tell you how upset I am about this but Iknow I just need to cut my losses.I suggest you do the same. Become a master carbineer, polearms and medic or something like that. Because honestly either the commando is just going to be worthless forever, be specialized at killing vehicles or something useless like that, or be upgraded and maybe maybe maybe equal to someone who puts their skillpoints in other combat uses. Either way by the time you are a master commando who might be balanced but definately won't be better then the other classes, me and everyone else will be master rifleman/2handed/medics, master bounty hunters, master pistoleer/smugglers, etc. and you will just be owned.

I tend to believe that adding a little happiness or relieving a little stress on people or a person has a multiplying effect and ends up spreading to everyone. I'm just doing my best in this post to lower the number of pissed off people in this world.

you would have to be an idiot to pursue commando without knowing of the problems. The problems won't be fixed if people don't pursue them. I fully intend on sticking to commando. All games have bugs and inbalaces in them, this is a major imbalance but the devs ARE WORKING ON IT. Honestly, what a naive thing to say

A fair balancewould be to make commando's very powerful as heavy weapons are and let the balance happen by default. A commando is going to be the priority target in any PVPbattle, if we're really able to doas much damage as the 'heavy weapons'we'll carry would indicate, then the price we'll pay is being a priority target.

Heavy weapons are always a priority target in real life, I'd think they'd try to mimic reality as much as possible here.

Regardless of all this, I still am sticking with commando. Besides, if we all just quit, where is the incentive for them to fix anything in this class. Hopefully if we keep the pressure on and prove that we're not going away, maybe that will move somebody at soe just a little bit faster.

The incentive is that no one will play the class. I.E. no one ever played a rogue in EQ, until the class go fixed and they decided to make some useful skills and backstab being a viable weapon. But until this class gets fixed, 250k on 2nd level flamethrower is ungodly long, esp when attacking with the equivalent of a cdef pistol....

I fully agree with you about cutting your loses. It seems this is a dead end profession simply because were not bounty hunters, riflemen, medics, or anything else that may come in handy in a battle. Being a commando makes people want to invite you quick' they are thinking oooo he can use demolition stuff and do lots of damage. The truth is you can't use the big stuff and even if you can it doesnt even come close to a t21 rifle or a virbo lance. Compared to other classes the only thing I see a commando good for is taking damage. I am going to college for a degee in computer repair so I know a little bit about programing. "IF" Sony decides to keep Commando as a playable profession it could take weeks or even months to repair. And even when they repair, Commandos will still be lacking the defence the title requires, because as you said weARE one of the first targets people aim for in PvP. Only time may tell but I think sony has based too much empasis on classes seen in sw movies to make the commando formiable in dueling,PVP and adventuring all together

I totally agree with Drak on this issue i have yet to get novice Commando but i seriously can't wait because i know the class is broken now but it will be fixed and I am going to College for Computer Science and this isn't a fix that takes months. Yes it would probably take about 100 hours but that is two weeks to a dedicated person. You would be surprise how motivated a programmer can get if they want/need to get something done (speaking from personal experience). Anyway I feel this profession has lots of potential and I am very stubborn to boot.

Uh Mr. Valentine, I have. It was 1 am when we arrived, and it was daylight when we left, which was right after we finished eating. We were having too much fun talking amongst ourselves, and wondering about the waitress missing for hours at a time, that we didn't really care. Ah, I miss college life.

As for the commando being the priority target on a battlefield by virtue of the heavy weapons, I'd have to agree. Anyone who's seen the H&K GMG man portable would have to agree that you want that guy dead fast. (It's a belt fed, full auto 40mm grenade launcher, for those who don't know. Major Boom).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And on a side note, a flamethrower was actually designed for taking out light targets. Specifically unarmored people. It's pretty useless against a tank, particularly modern, enviromentally sealed ones. Against people its great, it's area affect, it does severe damage to the targets, continues to damage them after the initial hit, can spread to collatoral targets as the initial victims run around, has beneficial secondary affects (particularly in enclosed spaces), can temporarily blind those it doesn't hit providing cover for allies to move forward, and is a great psychological weapon as well. Using it on a gnort, or a dancer, may seem overkill, but honestly, if someone lights you on fire, are you going to be thinking about much else at the time?

I dont agree with that, people played the Rogue in EQ even thou it was a dead end class

Now there are resons some people like myself would like to play commandoes:

  • We are simply, to Stubborn, we get stuck to something and we like to ride it thru

  • We like the challenge, so what if it ends up as crap, we can still look back and notice we went the road?

  • We have some hope, and everything eventually will be fixed,i dont care if it takes forever, there is still stuff i can do..

basically.. why should we give up even if you think its going no where.. i have patience.. why cant you?

Fortunately for me and probably for the other casual gamers, I can wait for the fixes. I'm enjoying the heck out of this game right now with the other skills that it will be weeks before I get a whiff of the novice tier in commando. What's the rush in becoming one anyways? Stop and smell the roses once in awhile? I think this game really is intended for the non-power players. But even if you are that highly skilled at the moment, you can always try some other profession and come back to commando after it's been fixed.

SOE may have majorly screwed up this profession for now, but at least they had the foresight to allow ppl to change their minds. In EQ, if your class was f'ed up, you'd have to start completely over. Here you can retain many skills you have already acquired.

I maybe adding my support to the original poster of this thread very soon.

After reading about other games of this kind, almost NONE of them ever really fixed classes until at least 6 months after release.
