I'm sure its been noted, but I figured I'd throw it out there anyway. Using Suppression Fire from Marksman: Ranged Support IV gives you Pistol XP instead of Heavy Weapons, if you use the Launcher Pistol. I checked the rest of the abilities granted in that line and they don't seem to have the same issue. At least, not that I noticed.

isthat what does it? I noticed every now and then that i'd get a little bit of pistol xp while using the LP. Too strange.
