Your mission: give me the last press I need... why should I join the brotherhood of Commandos?
Background: It took me a year. I've been on since just after release, and have taken the world's longest journey to this spot, through all the crafting professions, 2/3 the entertainer professions, and several other professional approaches to combat... and now, just after the one year anniversary, I'm feeling just about sold on Commando - I've read all the available board info (having the best FAQ written by Ivoni, just one letter away from my own avatar's first name, seems like kismet!)... I've been dropping other bits of professions piece by piece, and clawing my way up the prerequisites... just a few K more of Rifle XP (I had Master Rifleman last October... what a blast from the past this has been!), and I will be eligible to begin my journey. I've even already picked up some starting weaponry, ready to begin the minute the pulldown menu on the skilltrainer disappears.
Details: Having pored through the myriad posts here, it seems that this board is almost self-contradictory... sure, flamethrowers are alluring, but they're as useful as Bic lighters for accuracy (so I've heard)... grenades make big noises but blow you up instead of the enemy (so I've heard)... LPs have the same stats as even a good FWG5 pistol and use pistoleer stats anyway (none of which I have any more... sniffle...), so why not just be a pistoleer (so I've heard)... But on the other hand... Commandos are some of the most valuable players to have around (so I've heard)... Commandos can solo-hunt tons of stuff, or be the big brother protector to a group of other combatants (so I've heard)... many Commandos are almost a "brotherhood" of their own, amongst the most approachable, warm (heh-heh... flamethrower?), and seasoned players of the galaxy (so I've heard).
I just need one last little push, while I'm grinding... should I abandon the last set of skill points I'd need to (1/2 Carbineer skill tree, plus odds and ends from former professions like novice artisan and novice medic) in order to join that brotherhood? Help me out here...

Well if your looking for the flavor of the week commando isnt for you sir... The grind isnt easy ... The pay off isnt good. But we love being what we are and wish that SOE would give us the ability to be what we are...
Pvp.. Not so good
Pve. We kick arse
you put us in a group of 5 or more we will own Almost anything.... THat is our secret.. Commando became commandos to help and work as a team.. a were real good at it....I have grouped with many and it never surpises me that we all are unselfish and love to work together... Even if ive never met them.. it is in there nature to be that way.....
And you will find most of us have been here for a long time
good luck

I may not be a master yet (2.0.2.1) I find that when in a group with a doc, a TKA, and oner other ranged proff... we own everything... and i'n not even master yet (only master in group was TKA), and we walking in and out of the (new harder?) squill cave.. like we was going in and out of a nice garden lol
But also... I am already starting to feel more like helping ppl that are forming groups (i have always hunted alot in groups, but mostly of my own making).
Commando lose out on PVP but I'd say that was only really in one on one PVP... with the right tacs a commando in a group can be one of the most useful units on the battle field (clue some one to watch them close in). Also i've seen commados that get the right second proff do not too bad in PVP one on ones.
I can't get a second combat proff as i'm plaining on being a weaponsmith... but i'll still fight PVP in groups, even if i die.. better than one on one PVP, we are just too weak at the mo.

We are the few...
Bred for combat, bult for war,
We are the master of any weapon,
Pilot of any vehicle...
and fear no enemy.
Yet sorely gimped. Id suggest go commando, fully, being a commando for a year makes me appreciate the game more so than your average player - at least the few of us who have been commandos that long. The CB looks promising, and this may be the good time to hop aboard.
But don't look for any comforts till then, we got none. Yeah, our DoT does help groups sometimes...but having an extra swordsman or CM prolly helps better (Damage is better, DoTs are better respectively).
If you're committed, then go for it. Commando aint for the weak of heart...
To survive this long, one must be passionate about commando.
Edit: Btw we're only good in PvE atm due to armour/buffs...plus using TKM/Pistoleer..most of the commandos who are TKMs or MP's use those skills more so than their commando skills. So its pointless to say master another profession, and still be a commando as ours tends to be "seconday" function. For 8 months I loved with no other defenses from TKA..and believe me It sucked. (you try living without counters, and only +47 ranged/+44 melee defense)
