Thread: What Halo can teach us about Commando

Granted, SWG commandos are nothing like RL commandos. So that arguement is dead. Then, if so, why not look towards other Sci-Fiy stuff? One such piece...as all here prolly have played, is Halo.

Maybe its just me, got the Xbox Halo case next to me when I write this...also 2 nights ago, I beat the game (again) on legendary mode w/ my friend visiting from Texas. But then again, maybe it isnt.

"You are the last of your kind

Bred for combat, built for war

You are master of any weapon,

pilot of any vehicle...

and fear no enemy."

Thats on the back of the Xbox Halo case...each time i read it, the first thought that pops into my head is "Commando". Master Chief, in all respects is a Super-Soldier...isn't that what a commando is? Such as the mandalorians? Supercommandos they were...and cooly armoured to boot *wink*.

But think about it, the description of Master Chief. Commandos...there aren't alot of us around, at least Masters as its a somewhat hard grind. We are for combat and war. We need Master Marksman, so we got the majority of the weapon certs in the game. There aren't any combat vehicles...yet...but when there are, shouldn't commandos have an edge as well? After all, we are hardened soldiers...we're Elite.

And that brings us to fearing no enemy...yeah, I run from TKM's...but I dont -fear- them. hehe

So far, yeah this post is a bit humorous...but Im being serious as well too.

Look at the facts, Halo for PC has the Fuel Rod gun and Flamethrower as new weapons in multiplayer. This is JUST like our workhouse..the flamethrower, and the HAR and or one of our disposables. Master Chief also usesa Marine Pistol, an Assault Rifle, and a Rocket Launcher.

There aren't any assault rifles in the games, and this community has been wanting one for a while now that could be unique to commando. The Launcher Pistol is reminscent of the Marine Pistol, the Rocket launcher is...well...like ours (tho the Halo one is better :smileyvery-happy. Also...gernades too!

Nearly every tool Master Chief uses, is like what we use/want to use. How that he is an "experienced and hardened soldier who lives and breaths combat", reminds me of what it should be like to be a commando. The convenant fears Master Chief; commandos should be feared as well.

From a Sci-Fi standpoint, it makes sense for a Star Wars Commando to be an expert of Weapons and Heavy Vehciles...essentially, an Expert at Mayhem in general. RL Commandos mostly are covert, snipers, or behind the scenes soldiers...never front-line soldiers or shock troopers. Well..as our Flamethrower tree says, we -are- shocktroopers, we are the heavy infantry. We are the elite troopers, we are more like the Rangers rather than Delta Force/Commandos. Riflemen are snipers, Carbineers/pistoleers are Soldiers, BH's are rogues, Commandos are the Elite Soldiers.

Yeah, we there is a fuzzy line between being elite like Rangers, or being elite like Delta Force...we can have a mix of both. Master Chief sure was, he was both a front line soldier..and a covert operative (ie going in behind enemy lines). Not only that, he used pistols and other weapons, also was able to snipe. That's why we need Master Marksman. Also, he can pistol whip/rifle butt....this is exactly what we're asking for to represent our Unarmed Pre-reqs.

To me, Master Chief perfectly emulates what a SWG Commando currently is and should be. We basically have everything tool-wise as he does, but we are sorely lacking in how we use those. Already Ive seen some posts talking about Commando-only turrets, or Commandos having the ability to man turrets in tanks and such...or even having commando only vehicles. Aside from that, we have the weapons...we just need the dev's help in utilizing them...

So basically my point is, Commando atm IS what its suppoused to be save for 2 very very important things that are holding us back: 1) an assault rifle (ie repeater) 2) The proper skills to use FT/HAR/Consumables/Gernades/LP. Have those 2 things implented, then we -will- become Sci-Fi commandos...cuz...its already been proven and shown in Halo.

commando

n 1: a member of a military unit trained as shock troops for hit-and-run raids [syn: ranger] 2: an amphibious military unit trained for raids into enemy territory

Esentially, a commando is not a "hevy weapons specialist" persay, but a quick strike soldier. One who goes in to take out key targets quickly and effectively. Yes, demolition may be involved but not EVERY commando carries a pack of explosives and a rocket launcher.

But anyways, I do think that commando is a decent name for the profession as it stands anyways.

Just wanted to clear the facts up about what a commando really is though.

*ahem* First thing I said

Not to flame, but Thats a RL definition of commando. Atm as it stands, Commando is NO WHERE NEAR RL standards...and most likely will never be. Theres constant debate that it should, and shouldn't. I agree, it shouldnt be RL commando standards (which includes that definition). But I do see us as something along the lines of Master Chief. Why? Cuz we ARE already...but we still need to be led in the right direction with fixes and such to utlize what we have. Atm we are not working as intended, hence why we'll be the most affected in CB according to TH (up to you to believe that)....but theres a reason why we have the weapons we do....

Edit: Also, in shock troops I mean along the lines of Stormtroopers...they -were- the "feared" shock troopers of the empire. Also...Rebel Commandos are one of the few regular rebel NPCs that can almost stand up to them! hehe ...granted there were Storm Commandos as well and such...but also...since that definition says commandos are shock troops...then How come Stormtroopers don't fit the definition of commando either? Why? Because its star wars, not RL.

I hadn't really thought of it much until now, but I think you hit the nail on the head hear. MC is an MC. It never quite connected, but I've always thought that a Sci-Fi commando, such as us in SWG, should posess abilities akin to those of Master Chief - the elite, hardened soldier.

Of course as a general class I don't think we should be as strong as him, since he's more designed for a SP game where it's ok if the player is exceedingly powerful; however, we should generally have similar abilities. Particularly the assault rifle thing... I miss non FT/Pistols.

PS. You forgot to mention shotguns.

Commandos got the gear needed in SWG, with the exeption of an assault rifle. Its just a matter to merge the ingridients into a nice Commando mold.

Hopefully CB can put us closer to the better end.

I like the Halo argument. Especially if it means we get melee moves with Rocket Launchers

As for shotguns, I believe they're covered in the carbines. After all, there's a lot of cone attacks and the EE3 has a radius on all shots.

Oh yes, grenades in Halo are much better. Which reminds me... Why can't we have Halo Plasma Grenades - that stick onto people?!

Well with the shotguns, I specfically left out Shotguns....as there really arent in the game...save for several Carbines and the Scatter Pistol.

Granted, we should never be as strong as Master Chief, as he has a kickass shield generator, battle armour, and is a cyborg....but the tools he uses (mainly AR/Pistol/Hvy Weapons) are what we use....and to truely make a great SWG Commando, we should look at Sci-Fi commandos such as him...not RL commandos.

My biggest point in this is....the arguement to make commandos more RL commando like is just simply dead. And that we should aim for something like in Halo - because most of the weapons/ideas ARE already implented....and we really dont need a heck of alot of changing because of that (basically putting a different commando idea, that -works- on the street)
