Thread: Heavy Particle Beam is slow? Don't think so...

I'm a master weaponsmith/commando 0400/smuggler 0430 on Bria and I use lots of HPBCs and am surprised by the comments about them on this forum-especially complaints that they are slow. My latest batch of HPBCs have a speed of 4.4. At Heavy Weapons IV you get +70 in speed so the actual firing rate is reduced by 70%: 4.4 - (4.4 x .70)=1.3 Remember there are no speed multipliers with the cannons from specials-they just fire. I slice my own cannons and even with amodest speed slice (say 20%) the speed is reduced to 3.5. With a 3.5 speedcannon your firing rate (with the 70% reduction) is every second. Is a speed of 1/sec slow? I think the confusioncomes from the firing animation where you kneel, put your weapon down, shoulder the cannon and fire. This takes like almost a full second. But I can tell you as one who has fired many a cannon that the actual damage is applied immediately-just watch your combat spam or look for thefloaty numbers over your target's head. By the time you see your toon actually fire the damagehas allready been apllied one second previous.Often the animation is delayed by several seconds which makes it look even slower. I've one-shotted many mobsthat by the time the animation finally kicked in the targethad beendead on the ground for a full 5 seconds. Sometimes the animation never kicked in-I would hit the "fire" button, the target would flip over dead-my toon would never even move.

On a related note-I have a question for you Master TKA/commandos-I know that when you wield a melee weapon you get a 2.5 multipler in chance to hit (or something like that). I wonder if you're holding your vibroknuclers and fired a cannon if you would get the to-hit bonus for the cannon shot. This would be helpful due to only getting +60 in accuracy withthe weapon. I'm not sure if the computer actually considers you wielding the cannon-you never actually arm it. It may still consider you hold a melee weapon. Anybody know? With the new weapon delay switch the cannons/grenades are now the only way to fire a different weapon type without the delay. It would be funny to be a master TKA, wielding a VK during a duel and have a stockpile of HPBCs on hand-your opponent runs off kiting, gets to 48 meters and is thinking "oh i'm safe now-he's TKA and holding a VK-there's NO WAY he can touch me now" whereupon you drop to a knee and paste him with 7K of AP3 damage. OOOPS! Anybody tried this? You think there's a to-hit bonus with it?

I doubt it. At the present time, they aren't even treated like regular weapons. They don't add into your combat queue - as soon as you hit the command to fire the heavy weapon, it appears at the top of your queue, but it then fires before anything else you have listed there. Btw, this also means /aim doesn't work with heavy weapons, to my dismay.

Of course this doesn't actually add any proof to my doubting it, its just the feeling I get. If the vibroknucklers do effect the heavy weapons, its probably a bug.

Main reasons we don't use it is that its expensive and has limited ammo.

Yeah, HPBC's are very resource intensive. But they only require 4 power handlers and 1 rifle blaster barrel. I normally charge 15k for these on my server.

Rocket Launchers are a different matter. You need 4 power handlers, 8 projectile feed mehanisms, 5 proton grenades, and 2 weapon scopes. Not to mention about another 300 units of steel/iron. I recently tried some out on some turrets and you don't get the Heavy AP bonus so I was only hitting 1500-4000 points of damage instead of 3000-7000 points of damage.

I really hope they make the heavy weapons reloadable.

Heh, if there's one thing the HPBC's aren't it's slow. At HSW IV they fire once very couple seconds.

This proves problematic though, as it burns credits extremely fast and has a tendency to miss when out of it's small ideal range or on moving targets.

Wow, talk about luck. Hehe, I've had similar experiences though, I still have a SS of the time I 1-shot incapped someone with a RL while randomly running around.

Someone did that on Starsider. One-shot rocket incap from 80m through a bank (I'm assuming lag warp). It also happened to be against the single best PVPer on Starsider.

On a slightly related note -- I just blasted and killed a buffed padawan with a rocket launcher... 1 hit (ok.. not 100% true... rocket took him to a sliver of health, he had around 2600 max... swapped to flamethrower and did 2 normal shots (no special since i was 50m away)... he dropped good as dead).

Very intersting stuff, looks like I have to go play with some HPB's.

Are you sure it is +70 to HPBC speed?

Or is it +50?

Template being 0-4-0-0 as from what I can see Master Commando Box doesn't add and HPBC speed.
