Thread: Questions from an old Commando

Hey there folks. Just a couple of quick questions pertaining to commandos and the whole game in general...


I've decided to start playing again after being gone for quite a while. I was included in the last 3 months of beta and played live for about 2 months before calling it quits. Ended up dabbling in quite a few classes and mastered CH and BE pretty soon after launch. While those professions were fun, I decided that commando would be more to my liking, despite the sorry state the profession was in at launch. Unfortunatly due to personal reasons, I was unable to continue playing and did not even get to see the 1st of the commando special weapons revamp.


Coming back last night, I found the game has developed quite a bit from when I left. My main question would have to be...Where to begin? By this, I'm really wondering how I should go about setting priorities in terms of items to purchase, other professions to get skills from etc. When I left, all of my cash/items were given to friend who were still playing so Im pretty much broke atm, and all the new toys out there (pets/mounts, vehicles, upgraded droids etc) leave me with quite a few decisions. Just curious as to what you all would recommend as a good 1st purchase and if you have any long term plans yourself that might help me make such decisions.


In terms of profession choices, when I left, I was 2120 commando, master medic, and novice pistoleer. If I remember correctly, I was planning on trying out TKM as well (perhaps dropping master medic to novice since I despise crafting that much). Since I dont know much about our weapons since the revamp, Im not sure if flamethrower is our new main weapon or if its still launcher pistol like it was when I quit. Any template suggestions or insights would be more than helpful as well. I'm not looking for the "uberest" professions around, I just like to play and have fun.


Just walking around some last night, I see that doctor buffs seem to be all important now, and it also appears that food was given quite a boost as well. If you can think of any other important areas that might be overlooked by someone starting anew at this time, please enlighten me if you can.


Let me just thank anyone who replies ahead of time for your help. I didnt think the game would have changed so much in the time I had been good, but then again, change is a good thing =)

Wow, where to start? Flamethrower is our main weapon, LP is just a footnote now. The Heavy Acid Rifle or otherwise known as Snot gun is worthless even when our FT is being used against a fire resistant creature it does more damage then the HAR. Disposisble heavy weapons such as grenades, and launchers are a mixed bag. Grenades can't be blocked, but they have a long reload time and only come 5 to a stack. Launchers such as the Heavy particle beam cannon, rocket launcher, light cannon etc are good at removing turrets, ATSTs, and in some VERY lucky cases and blow right through people in PVP. In my experience I rarely use any throw away guns, my HAR is in the bank and all I cary is my flamethrower.

The current "in" armor is composite, which generally sells for 200K unless it's a PVP set that has stun resists. That will run you near 600K.

I have very limited knowledge about mounts, I do know that you can fire off of them but you travel slowly. The best vehicle in game is the AV-21 landspeeder, but don't expect to buy one for cheap they're running for nearly 2-3Mil. The basic vehicle that people use is the Swoop speederbike.

The latest changes to our profession from what I've read (I haven't been playing since beta, just got here two weeks ago) and seen do not forbode well for us. Our weapons do less damage then other professions that in skill points only cost half as much, such as rifleman or TKM. Our DOTs were reduced from the insane damage they used to spit out to a lower more reasonable level, but with the long reload time and lack of AP (Armor Piercing) for our weapons it just scratches the paint of most armor.

We lack melee defense, so I suggest you DO pick up TKM and master it to give you every melee boost you can get. Master Medic isn't a bad skill as it allows you to heal yourself, however; I think pistoleer is better for your dabble choice as it allows you to use better skills for the LP as well as giving you heavy defensive boosts.

Melee owns the game with their Dizzy KD in PVP, and having to be close with the FT isn't somewhere you want to be. But, we have no choice so that is something that we just need to do.

My current set up is Master Commando/Master Teras Kasi in training/0300 Smuggler (for base hacking), however I'm thinking of removing the smuggler completely and picking up Pistoleer for the anti dizzy defenses. I use my FT and my vibro knuclers. My vehicle is a Swoop Speederbike (I'd much rather perfer a AV21) and I have an ATST for a pet. I use a full set of normal composite armor (200k) and keep a backup set of Stormtrooper (the suck) for pvp.
