Can somebody tell me how combat works? I am considering maxing out the precision tree on TKA because of its defensive nature (Cammando offense + good defense sounds great), but I don't really understand the system. Just how important is ranged defense?

I'll bump this and ask instead of a lesson maybe you can point me to a good place to learn the mechanics of combat?

I've been thinking about going up that TKA tree also...I guess I don't really understand your question though. Ranged and Melee defense work the same whether the bonuses come from a melee tree or a ranged weapon tree. If you're asking how effective they are,and if it's a good idea to lvl up that TKA treethen you're in the same boat with me

Defense mods usually depend on what you are holding at the time. If you are unarmed, then all of the Tera Kasi mods apply, but pick up a knife and there they go. If you look at the mods it will say unarmed melee defense, unarmed knockdown defense, etc.

No actually it doesn't say Unarmed defense, only Unarmed Toughness is Unarmed specific, all others stack into the same stat with defenses from other professions.

The only tka defense that applies to when your unarmed is unarmed toughness to my understanding. All the rest are generic and should work (that is if they do) no matter what weapon you are holding.

How does Ranged defense work? I need a lesson on the mechanics of combat in general. Is it worth it to me to grind out unarmed with no VKs until tka nov just to get a high ranged defense? Does somebody have a link to a good swg combat site?

Essentially, in theory, the Ranged Defense or Melee Defense SHOULD make you harder to hit with the appropriate weapon. Now, as far as anyone knows, the 'Generic' ones stack with one another.
i.e. The bonuses I get from my unarmed will stack with my pistol, as long as it doens't specify a weapon.
In actuality, these seem to be broken. Someone once came up with the idea of going Brawler/TKA/Fencer/Swordsman (my suggestion was just to take the defensive lines alone from the classes so you could get the Pikeman defenses as well, but I digres), because the total bonuses Vs. attacks such as stun, dizzy, KD, etc, would be phenominal.
So, you asked how they work? Well, they should be a reactive, passive defense. In other words, you get attacked, they kick in (hopefully) and offset attacks/dodge/etc. You don't have to key them up, they're supposed to just work.
I think I read somewhere it was a known problem with defenses that they were working on...

I'll ask again, does anybody know of a good site that can answer a lot of the questions that are not being answered here?
