Thread: real life and the 2.5x damage multiplyer
theres a difference between a long rifle (sniper rifle), and an assult rifle. theres a difference between a semi automatic rifle and a fully automatic rifle (duh). if some one came up to you with a knife and you try to fight at close range with a large rifle, your ass would be handed to you. if a rifleman could hit as hard as a tka, but at a distance, then whats the point of being a tka? you have to give melee something to make up for the fact that they have to be right next to you to do any damage. youre suppose to kill them before they get to you, youre suppose to use your special attacks to create an advantage, youre suppose to use your brain. if youre tired of being raped in melee, then get suppression fire from the marksman ranged weapon support tree.
I disagree, for purposes of melee combat, the only difference is if the rifle has a bayonet attached or not. Besides, even if a knife weilder has an advantage over a guy with a rifle, if the rifleman has had even basic melee training he's better off with the rifle than without it, which is not the case in SWG.
The problem is that the damage multiplier is a balance factor, and has nothing to do with reality. It was merely part of an attempt to create a rock/paper/scissors system where riflemen were good at long range, but sucked up close. It was also an attempt to make melee classes more useful by being able to do more damage to riflemen. This is still valid in PvP, but the problem is that in PvE just about everything melees, which makes riflemen, and now commandos, far less effective.
please, please, please, stop comparing a game to RL:
In RL a sniper could kill you in one shot without a problem. In RL a Flmethrower would kill you in one spray without a problem (almost instantly on top of that), in RL, a pistoleer could kill you in one shot. in RL a Tiger would rip you apart, even if you have tenfold your pistol skills, in RL an Elephant would mow you down, if you don't have a small army.....
get the picture? If you compare the Game to RL and would adjust it, to be like in RL, you would be dead, once you walked 5m on any advanced planet, regardless, what your skill. Would that be fun? No, i would not. hence, something called "game mechanics". if you don't ölike the game mechanics of this game, play another. period. But do not compare RL to a game. It is simply ridiculous and let's you look like fools.
