Thread: Questions from a wannabe Commando
Hi guys,
I only started playing SWG recently and decided that being a commando seemed like a good plan. Not until now I started visiting this particular forum and I must say I am quite astonished at what I have been reading.
1. Do I not need to be an Artisan (eng)? I saw that in the game that commando was not listed on top, but hey, in the manual it says it does. I figured that was a small bug or so. But reading a post here, seemed to indicate I don't need this at all....
2. Are certain things really 'broken' or do they just not work well, i.e. are not effective? Some posts talk about this, but I can't exactly figure out, what does, and what doesn't work. I must say, that this does tick me off. Firstly, because I have to learn this from a forum, secondly, what game has things that don't work at all. I know that bugs exists, but non-working stuff. It is like an adventure game, where you get to the end, and it doesn't work... I mean, fine that they keep on balancing the game continuously (for the better or the worst), but this really blows my mind, that after months after launch, some things don't work (If I am to believe your posts, I am still not that far in the xp trees).
Maybe an updated manual should be available as a pdf for newbies like me. That way I would not have to search in forums and ask these questions.
Don't do it. Save yourself. Become a chef. It is the only safe harbor from the Devs at the moment. Why are you still standing there....? RUN !!! SAVE YOURSELF!!
Hehe![]()
Yeah, I do make some fine lasagna, if I may say so... hehe.
Most of the posts in here are now about the 2.5 x damage and well, I can't say anything bout that, since I am not there yet. But what pisses me off is that I wasted a lot of time already on things which have changed. How was I supposed to know? I also find it quite amazing that after such a long time after launch, some bugs are still there... missions wp's in houses, mobs instantly moving from 30 m to 2 m away.. and from what I gather on these boards, a lot of annoyances with non-working commando stuff too...
Do you think I could open a soup place when I am a chef? That will definitely make me switch
1 more question. Where does it say in the updates that they changed that 2.5 x times for commando's? I can't find it, and would like to know how to figure out how to find these things in the future.
Thanks
Welcome to the fold...
The artisan requirement was removed a while ago. We no longer craft anything. This has led to a few "missing" schematics, so grenades can no longer have all the enhancement options they once had, but that's a minor issue.
As for things being broke....there's relative amounts of broken. Back when we needed artisan skills the profession was very broken. Heavy Weapons didn't exist (other than the Launcher Pistol...and that gave Pistol XP, not Heavy Weapons XP for a while). And when heavy weapons were introduced, they were so underpowered that even low level spawns could present a significant threat to the life of a commando (stupid durnis think they're so tough).
Amonth or so ago, the profession has a major fix (let's call this the "First Big Commando Patch") that made us very powerful in combat (and some have argued too powerful largely because of the strength of the damage over time (DoT) effects from our flamethrower specials and because we had a 2.0-2.5x multiplier on any damage we did to rifle wielding opponents). While the fire DoT continues to be debated, most commandos (and I suspect all riflemen) agreed that the multiplier against riflemen was unfair.
To fix that, the devs reclassified our weapons as "rifles". That means we no longer have the advantage of the multiplier when facing riflemen, but also means close range (melee) fighters have a multiplier against us, which was not so before.
Because our special attacks require us to be very close to the target, we have become a very vulnerable to melee combatants...to the point where most attempts to use our specials against them are "suicide" runs where we use the special, damage them, and get incapacitated. There is still some reason to make these runs in group combat...as the Flamethrower DoT remains quite powerful and useful.
As a "solo" profession, though, it's tough to make use of specials against certain NPCs and almost every animal...as we're much better off attacking from a distance where our specials cannot be used and where our accuracy is generally terrible, even at Master level. All that said, where we are today is way better than where we were prior to the First Big Commando Patch...though significantly less powerful than we were a mere week ago.
Things work...just not as well as last week.
Thanks Jeren,
that clears up a lot of the questions I had.
I do wish though, that this (fairly important)information could just be published in a more normal way. I mean, as a new player the first thing I do is follow the manual and not browse all updates on the web sofar, of which half doesn't make any sense initially anyways. Maybe a good idea: a new manual online. Hey, guess what, there is. It says.... the complete and CURRENT manual. But guess again... it still stays you have to be an artisan to become a commando. sigh.... How am I supposed to guess what has changed?
Sounds like the devs opted for a simple option by reclassifying all weapons as rifles, a real good fix might have been a lot more work for them, but that is just my guess. I do like this game a lot sofar though, so I will stick out for now. But in order to keep this interestingfor everyone, I thinkthey do need to put more effort in than they do now.
Now I am here asking questions already, I figured another one wouldn't hurt.
What are your opinions on what profession to choose? Would you recommend me becoming a commando or not (before I try and gather all the combat xp)? If not, what would you recommend? (I am a master marksman now and a unarmed spec)
Thanks
heres my take on the commando line currently im 1-0-3-0
im working on it some day i will make master but it realy depends on your play style do you like to solo or hunt in groups i know solo in the beginning it is realy rough but as you move up your trees it gets alot better i like the feeling i get when some one says hey hes a commando well follow him in lol then i die but hey what other profession can kill 3 storm troopers while lieing on its back while incaped it makes you feel so good when you see that st walking up to db you and drops 10m away from your dot in groups you shine like a bright star because you can use your speacial and then run and hide behind that ch or pistoleer and when your 15 secs up go out and finish off what you started when you first get novice commando flame thrower sucks launcher pistol isnt adecuate (i know i spelled that wrong) but all in all if you wanted a profession that was easy and could master in no time pick something else that doesnt take mastering one and a tree from another to even start i love being a commando its fun for me yes i die in pvp alot but im not realy a pvper but when the call to defend my beloved anchorhead comes in im right there getting poisond and shot all to hell but hey its only wounds and there is a whole hell of alot of dancers and medic just waiting to get xp from you
so if you ask me is commando a good profession hell yeah is it broke i dont think so could it be better maybe
now im off to find that chuba that kicked my arse earlyer so i can stick a proton grenade up its rear and watch it go pop
