I recomend getting pistoleer and owning stuff up. You'll get the combat xp and some very handy skill mods for your Launcher Pistol, which you should use exclusivly to level your flamethrower skill to at least 2, since you cant hit jack with it as a novice.

Find a creature handler friend with a Graul/Tank and go to Dantooine. Kill those nasty pikets, huurtons and bols. or go group hunting and Kill everything that moves.

Grenades, lots and lots of grenades. Use grenades on lairs, worked well for me. Also start heading up the pistol line. You'll get loads of combat xp there as well.

If you're going master, as any honest commando does, it'll come as you work the other three trees.

I just made novice commando on monday, i aslo got novice smuggler. what i did to get combat xp was buy a factory crate of 25 packs of c12 grenades (3.6 attack speed 430-830 damage) then go to dath and hunt rancors. while i was hunting i maxed out on pistol xp. at that point, because i couldnt get pistol xp, i instead got combat xp in huge amouts (like 2k-3k) i figured it must have been a bug, but who cares, it help shorten the time i needed to make novice commando
