Thread: My Thoughts and Concerns, and some Constructive Feedback on the CU.

Wow... I must admit, the CU is nothing like I expected. Basically, I'm creating this thread so we can give some constructive feedback to the devs, apart from the opinion poll after you exit and bug reports.

So basically, here's what I like, and think doesn't need to change.

  • Our consumables are no longer consumable, and are now equippable. This is how I thought it should have been in the first place anyway.

  • Combat seems much more balanced. I've heard from some people who opened the tre files that the jedi are losing a lot of skills. I don't have anything against jedi, but if melee is really being toned down, there'd be no way for the ranged professions to survive against jedi in their current state on live.

  • Higher elite profession requirements, and lower hybrid profession requirements.

  • The supposed end to "uber" defense stackers.

  • More ranged usage, less melee usage.

  • Grenade state effects and dots.

And here's the stuff I don't particularly like, and I think need to change, or be tweaked.

  • Super high powered newbie mobs--This is going to be fixed eventually, according to the devs.

  • The mobs are giving far less xp than before--Also going to be fixed.

  • How we are going to be a "power-up" profession. I have no problem with being able to increase the power of other profs. specials, but we Commandos have been pushing to be stand alone, not needing any other professions to survive, and still be viable in PvP/PvE. I am very concened by our lack of specials, and I'd really like to see a few being put in.

  • A lot of the old specials are gone, and most professions now have around 3-5 individual specials (not counting the improved/advanced versions of the specials). The thing I really liked a lot about the old system was just how many specials one had at their disposal.

  • Alright, I'll admit it, I HATE the new UI and particle effects. This is probably my biggest problem in the CU. We didn't ask for the UI changes, and we didn't need the UI changes. But maybe if we can show the devs we don't like it and at least want an option to switch the UI back to the old one, they'll listen.

If you have any other thoughts/feedback, please, do post them. I'd like to get a list together of the top 5 things we think need to be changed (not neccesairily about the Commando profession, I think that's Starnick's job , but about the game's new functions itself).

DISCLAIMER: This is in no way an "I hate the CU thread". I'm extremely happy with most of what I'm seeing. But I don't want to pretend that everything is perfect; it's not, and it'll never be perfect. So let's see how much we can improve the CU from a player's perspective.

Also, I'm posting this thread here because the Commando community has proven that it is one of the most mature communities on the forums, that you guys haven't given up hope on the CU yet, and in fact, quite the opposite, and because we have a dev that's been replying to a lot of our feedback; more than any other forum since the CU beta came out.

  • This is also my main problem with the CU so far. The UI didn't need changing, they are just changing it to make it more like EQ2 and WOW. This isn't EQ2 or WOW, it's SWG, so can we have our old UI back?

    /agree

Please give us an option to keep the old UI. Even in EQ2 it bothered me. Just looks too cartoonish to me. Way too colorful and distracting. I want the fun in the game, not in pretty (or not so pretty) pictures.

Actually there are a lot of things I liked about the CU, but I'm pretty upset over the loss of specials, and the conversion of the old ones as well. I have to agree, that as a Commando, I have always counted on us being improved in the CU, and it really looks like we have been converted into an auxillery or adjunct profession to another main profession. I did't spend that much time fighting, I was mainly concerned about the skill trees, and the specials, and this was a huge infuriating disappointment to me after waiting almost 2 years for this. Don't expect them to write a bunch of specials in just a week or two-it's not going to happen, and that being the case, I think I'm going to quit this game and cancel my subscription for good. What a let down.

Beyond this, I noticed that there wre no bonuses for LP like we discussed, we still have the Acid Rifle and whehter or not that will be useful as a stacker profession is a mute point BECAUSE, we do not have enough skill points specialize in all 3 ranged categories to make the stacker aspect worthwhile. We have to choose one of them, and thus discard the rest of our weapons...and ya know what this means? It means we in fact have drastically less "tactical" choices. Now, we are restricted to that one weapon that works well, and when we encounte the different armor types, etc, well, we run and we're screwed.

I think what hacks me off most about the complete lack of specials, is that Commando is now cast as a member of the NRA who can pick up any weapon and pull the trigger, but has no clude about what SpecOps or clandestine operations are, let alone, battle tactics, field intelligence, demolitions, infiltration, or anything else that is remotely "commando" like. I realize thee were no plans to incorportate these abilities and concepts, but now we're even farther from them before being a collection of certs and nothing more. What a waste.

Well, it's been fun guys, looks like I'll only be arond for a couple more weeks, since the CU was the only thing keeping me around anyway and it looks like it's gong to wipe out the only class I had any desire to play.

All professions are that way now. For maximum combat efficency you'll pretty much need 2 Master professions, there is no standalone professions anymore.

We are not Commandos in the modern real world definition, but the SW unreal one

Commandos are (in SW) Heavy weapons dudes of the 'real' world. When I was in the Army each platoon had a Hvy weapons squad carrying machine guns, recoiless rifle and/or TOW/Dragon anti-armor missile launchers.

    ^^

    This what we are.

As to CU, so far so good. Even getting used to the colored icons. Xp does seem too slow though, not sure what the equivalent newb creatures on live give xp-wise.

my brothers, think on this well.......

combat is resolved through tactics and taking advantages as they present themselves. given this fact. one of the greatest advantages we have been given, is the unknown factor.

wth are you talken about zero, your on crack. no no hear me out.

anyone with eyes can pick apart our skill tree and prepare to face us. what they dont know, is what else have we got, what other proffs are we packin, what else can we pull out to hurt them with. this is a great advantage brothers. beacause we can use all other specials with our gear, the enemy really has no idea wth we gunna do.

all we can do is wait and see in the end.

You know nothing is better than finding that one guy whos a commando, has his armor colored camo to match his environment, drops down to prone with his RL or Worse, does a /cover, disapears from radar, crawls over the hill into a bush by a tree, and then unleashes HOLY HE__ from his undisclosed location on a poor opposetly aligned faction member, and the confusion is on after he is stuck down and is taking HEAVY fire from a commando in a non disclosed location....

thats how i look at it, WE ARE NOT the power up, all these other joes are MY power up and i intend to USE THEM as I see fit to make myself better as a commando. I have to think its a state of mind when thinking about commandos, we have a few in my guild on bloodfin and i ask them what are you, they say commando tkm, i say what are you first, they say both.... I am a Command BH and im always a Commando first every thing else is subject to change, but i always remain commando, from commando/chef, to commando ranger, i still toat my guns and deal my damage and after the curb goes live i will do the same, only this time I will have the upper hand in knowing what i truely am and having that edge!

ok lets break down some of the negative aspects of the curb that i do not like

i hate that white glowy area bacta heal, that flash is HUGE and if all 8 ppl are using it WOW talk about lag city!!!!

the partical effects remind me of spiderman comics and the old pbs spiderman show from the 70s and 80s

some are cool but most are not needed.

color icons, ok thats a easy one to fix and the devs dont even have to lift a finger, look at your macros guys and gals, all the old icons are there still with the new ones, now really how many of us currently play with all the games current live icons, or do you have many macros and hot keys tailored for you???

im with starnick and the others on this, lets not judge the book by its cover, for thats all we can see now, lets wait get into it and then see, also see my post about the plan for super weapons so that the devs can see what our TOP end super best of the best guns can be...

    thanks

Also guys...don't forget, we haven't been able to test out exactly how commandos will be dmg wise. That was the primary concern during the "Alpha Phase" where we were worried that we would be underpowered as a result, we were told that once we got a hands-on experience it'll make sense (and be balanced)

I for am, am still a bit worried -- but we need to give it a chance before disliking the loss of our specials. Im not concerned at all with AoE...commando's are Hvy damage and are defined by our weapons. From what we've seen thus far, commando's are going to not only do lots of damage, but have a tremendous AoE benefit with that damage.

As for a power-up profession, I don't really see us as that (although I think garvin called us that). We're unique in a way where we can't be easily classified - except that our weapons are what makes commandos, commandos. If they're a bit underpowered...we'll make sure the devs hear about it

But, also, as another poster mentioned...in a way, all the professions are "power-up"s, and stand-alone commando's wouldn't survive as a fully templated rifleman for example. Since we already will be doing immense AoE and DoTs with our weapons...we can use that, and actually have -other- professions enhance US. Same goes with the other side of the fence, its a matter of how you look at things.

Its something we're keeping an eye on...and once we can test the elite skills, we'll be focusing immensely on (hence why we haven't seen a commando focus thread yet...dang newbie phase!). Also, in my opinion, I dislike the UI - especially fonts/names/group UI myself...hopefully that's getting a smooth over.
