Oddly enough, Commando was the first profession that I ever wanted to do when I read about the various professions, all the way back in December of 2003 when Engineering I-IV was still listed as a requirement for Commando in the manual. I wanted to use heavy weapons. I wanted to set up the turrets and mobile weapons on the battlefields as promised by the manual. I got all the up through Unarmed IV, mastered Marksman, and for some reason, changed my mind. I don't even remember why, now.

Oh yeah, I think it was hologrinding. I did Combat Medic, instead.

Anyway, I played for six months, quit for six months, and now I'm back. I'm done with my FS grind (got four free unlocks, huzzah), and I've just been mastering professions I always wanted to try for the heck of it. Call it...hologrinding without reward, if you will. So after doing Brawler, Fencer, Swordsman, Pikeman, and Scout, I'm now giving Commando another try since it was, after all, the first profession I ever set my sights on. I was going to master it, fight Mel, then drop it for Jedi next phase, but looking at the docs for the CU, I'm really, really tempted to keep Commando for awhile after I fight Mel. The consumable weapons becoming non-consumable really is a nice step, as well as the new weapons art and increased abilities. I'm having a decent amount of fun with the Launcher Pistol, though I'm looking forward to playing more with the flamethrower. So far I've just used /flamesingle1 on lairs and creatures I was fairly certain I could kill quickly--that is, when I could hit anything. I liked doing that much damage, though. It's a tough grind, however, and it's frustrating going from area melee attacks like I did with all the Brawler classes to single target kills like now. I found that as a Novice Commando, I couldn't take the same missions I could as a Novice Swordsman, and I got less XP in a longer amount of time. But you know what? I had more fun doing it.

I've been browsing through the various forums hearing the different professions' opinions of their roles in combat in the CU, and I've been surprised at some of the negativity without people actually trying it out. What's imprressed me most, however, is the positive attitude of the Commando forum. You guys have pretty much had nothing but good things to say about the CU so far, and I like reading posts from people excited about the CU and not just calling it "WoSWG" or "EverGalaxies 2." They drew some aspects of other games, so what? Is Doom 3 just a Wolf3D copy because it uses the concept of a HEALTH BAR? I guess the Commando profession is excited about all the new weapons and skills and you (we, actually, since I'm currently 0-0-1-0 in Commando) get a good deal out of it. It's mostly been your attitude as a profession that's wanted me to stay as a Commando up past when I could have become a full Padawan.

So thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I won't be a Commando forever (maybe, I'm not a Master yet....), but I won't just do a Master-then-drop like I did with Swordsman and Fencer. I kept Pikeman for a whole week! I've been Teras Kasi for a couple months, though. After all, I don't have to do the Padawan trials IMMEDIATELY after fighting Mel, and I won't be losing Jedi XP if I should tragically fall in battle before I become an Initiate or Padawan.

Flame on. The good kind of flame, coming out of the tip of my flamethrower.

Great post...

The funniest but true thing I've ever said about the Commando forum, is that "for a profession that prides itself on having a FlameThrower, you'll find the least amount of flames in our forum"...

I think most of us see beyond the "visuals" and are just excited that things will WORK better for us in the Post CU gameplay. So what if things look funny...and So what if some things appear "magical" (there are many "magical" elements currently in game that we already ignore)...as long as we can play the profession we love with pride and not be laughed at anymore, then I'm in favor of ALL of the changes...

Commandos have a hard adjustment to make...currently when folks (even commandos)think about what a Commando is, they think about the FlameThrower...When some of us saw the FT cert'd at Flame III our first reaction was "but we need our FT"...right there that told me just how dependent we have become on our security blanket...we havelike4 or 5weapons (not including Grenades) available to us below Flame III (via our pre-reqs and Novice Commando as well as the RL at Flame I)...The FT now becomes a upper level weapon and that scares some folks who can't imagine using anything else. That will likely be our biggest adjustment (next to not off'ing ourselves with our own grenades).

It's like we are venturing into new territory with this CU, and many if not most of us are excited to finally see change...especially change that can be reflective of the issues we've complained about for so long.

Well thanks

Yeh, us commandos are very open about the CU. If we like things they we say we like them. If we dont like things, then we say we dont like them in a constructive way. Then we have a discussion

Its no good moaning about the CU like most people do. Its comming no matter what. Its about embracing it and working with it to see how we can make our profession the best it can be in the CU

So we are happy and havin positive chats bout the CU and commandos. Personally, the more i play with the CU the more and more im loving it. Its just so much fun fun fun!
