Thread: Perhaps we need to make sure Commando is not too powerful.

Okay, this is likely going to be unpopular with money of you. Now, let me first say, I love many of the changes to commando the CU is bringing. Being able to use more weapons and grenades really makes me feel like a true commando. But lately, I have been hearing MANY people say that they are planning to go commando after the CU. Yes we haven't tested the elite profession yet, but when we do, we may want to make sure that we are not at a level where we become a FOTM. I don't know about the rest of you, but I like the commando community the way it is. I don't want it to become saturated with people only choosing the profession because its "uber". Basically, we need to just make sure that we are gods of war to the point that a large majority of the population comes to the profession and takes away any unique qualities we could have.

Like Garvin says, Commando is basiclly a"powerup"for every other profession ranged profession and after looking at the entire tree I can see why he says that. Commando is gonna be a hell of a profession stand alone, add in Rifleman, BH, or Pistoller and it'll be alot like a melee stacker is now I think. So I'm sure Commando and BH will be switching FOTM for awhile untill the Devs swing the almighty Nerf Bat on them.

If things stay as they are or are fairly close, I expect to see Commandos as often as I see TKMs now.

I think that you will see a lot of people go commando in the beginning and then after a few weeks it will just be dabblers. Being a Master Commando requires a certain play style. Those that accept this style will remain Master Commandos, all the others will dabble for certain weapons. The key thing to remember is that we do no have any specials in our professions only weapons with nice specials. I think we will lots of people going for other professions for there specials. Also if you really look at all the other professions their weapons are not all to bad either. The other thing you have to remember is that Commando, BH, and Smuggler are really the only combat professions where as the others are more specializations. It would only make sense that people would be drawn to one of these three. Melee as it stands is not as powerful as it is currently.

Well, Commando, and (I haven't checked much) the Smuggler forums seem to be the places where people aren't whining about the CU. And, we're probably the two most improved professions in the CU. So it seems natural for people to think the Commando "is the answer for the CU'.

In my opinion, I'd rather be powerful and possibly susceptible to FOTM, than be underpowered and laughed at by idiots every time a tka kills me.

If we get a hoard of new people who want to be "uber" in the forums, we've just got to make surethey don't get out of hand and go along on our daily business.

OOOO, I want to be Uber!, I want to be Uber, lol.

Come on, yeah I agree, too many people are gonna switch after teh upgrade because it will be that new fotm, but I think it will be a profession that will level off. Either you like blowin stuff up, or you don't. Those that want that close up feeling are gonna go right back to their swords and sticks soon enough, at least I hope, lol.

All I can say is the last almost 2 years of playng a Smuggler/Commando will finally be worthwhile. I dont care if everyone flocks to our profs I was here before them and I'll be here once they leave.

Still I do have a niggling suspicion Commandos are being percieved as "U3h4" allready by 99% of the people that have read anything about the CU and when that happens the nerf bat will eventually get weilded justified or not just like what happened to usin the past.

You can allready see loads of posts about people going this combo and that combo, to be the bestest badest player out there, on the forums and a large number (if not all) include Commando. Interesting considering everything is still subject to tweaks and changes but hey, kids, what can you do eh?

The commando community has a proven track record that we don't want to be "uber"...Awhile back we had a definite advantage over other ranged professions when we did the Melee Damage bonus to them via our attacks. We felt it was over-powering and worked hard to get it changed even though we knew it would decrease our power. In the end, we became the targets as well for the Melee Damage bonus.

So I totally agree...no flames...If we see something on TC5 that over-powers us, we'll be the first to suggest it get's decreased...already many of us noticed that the pre-Commando grenades were a bit juiced up and suggested decreases...we'll do the same for post-Commando abilities if that's the case...

Our advantage should be Heavy initial damage, but comparable sustainable DPS over time...If we meat that goal, we will be balanced well...if we have higher intial damage AND higher DPS then our opponents, even over time, then we'll be over-powered...if we have higher intial damage, but much lower DPS over time when compared to our opponents, then we'll know we are under-powered. Either way, we'll be testing closely to try and get as close to that "balance" as we can.

I have been Commando with most of my time in SWG.

"Uber" is not a word my character uses to describe himself.

Its really the users play style now more i think *hopefully* Those who are smugglers could take up pistoleer. Honestly the three main marksman professions are what i'd consider the "powerups" granted, they're the base classes, we're more of the elite class. We're Commandos....but I'm a commando specialized in carbines...and you're one specialized in rifles, or pistols. Or maybe you chose to use your commando skills to catch bounties....or you chose to be a squad leader, the elite of the elite. Thats what we are.

I dunno.... the way I see it the reason commando would be used as a power up would be for the weapons. We get no unique special abilities, and defenses gained could easily be gained from a seprate ranged profesion as well as new attacks. So would a well establishedriflemen character readily drop his super krayt T21 for a flamethrower? If I were in such a position, I'd rather pick up pistoleer or carbineer and gain some more of the attacks as well as the defenses.
