Currently im going to try a few other professions, but i want to make sure coming back to commando isnt TOO bad if/when the time comes.

Im told as long as i dont GAIN anymore HW XP, my current XP count will stay.

So if i save up 900k HW XP, and drop everything, i should keep the hw xp, as long as i dont GAIN any HW XP, which isnt a problem if i lose novice commando, no way to get the XP as far as i know outside BH...

this will allow me to try out doctor and armorsmith, see if i like it, if not, come back and at least be able to train to FT 3 (or close to it).

If anybody knows the answer, please inform.

This is absolutely correct. I have done TKA and Commando over and over using this technique. What I would do is get my max exp (HW or unarmed 900k) and drop whatever I didn't want in the profession but kept 1 tree at box 4 (obviously not the combat exp trees) until I was prepared to drop the whole profession. As long as I NEVER pulled out ANY of my heavy weapons, I did not lose my exp. One time I made the mistake after dropping TKA of messing up switching weapons once and hit a mob for unarmed damage... lost like 750k unarmed exp.

I had 900kxp just the other day, then dropped commandofor carbineer, dont ask. I never used or equiped a heavy weapon since; I knew I would end up losing that xp if I did. However when I look at my xpyesterday it says 300kxp!?! So I lose 600kxp and i dont even know how.

And if you ever train in survey1 again your survey xp will be capped at 2x the amount needed for survey II so you will lose all excess.

I've lost over 100K scouting xp this way when I slowly surrendered ranger skills.

The system allows you to store 2 x the amount needed for your next box.

When you train it basically goes through and resets all of your xp to a cap.

So if you have hunting 1 from the scout tree then the most you can store up is 10K. If you have hunting IV and you surrender it and lose scout completely if you come back you'll only have 2K scouting xp because the system removes excess xp when you train.

To answer your question in a nutshell if you drop commando completely and if you ever decide to come back then yes you will lose hundreds of thousands of heavy weapons xp because the system will remove all excess xp above the cap.

There is a slight bug with the way XP is displayed. It might seem you have a lot of XP stored after you have dropped a skill, but then if you use the weapon (or pick up the skill)again you loose all your Xp stored.
