Am i correct in assuming that when using a launcher pistol you only get heavy weapons exp (not pistol exp) However if u have pistoleer specials( or dirty fighting specials) u can use them with the launcher pistol? If this is the case it would make sense toget somepistoleer prior to mastering commando.....Yes?

Very much so. Getting some basic pistoleer skills really helped me make those first few boxes of the flame tree. Starting over with +10 skill (or so) in your weapons is pretty harsh, so the launcher pistol gives a nice leg up. All I had was novice and one box of the speed/accuracy line, but it was very handy. If you are willing to dump the combat xp you can get pistol whip... good luck.

In the same token, do rifleman specials work for any of the other commando weaps such as the heavy acid rifle, particle beam cannon or rocket launcher?

only RANGED SUPPORT specials work with the flamer, acid rifle and launcher pistol

launcher pistol uses pistol specials.

acid rifle and flamer use their own specials and ranged support specials.

shoulder fired weapons and grenades dont use specials.
