It depends on how you want to play it. If you want to power your way to a combat profession and work on nothing but your goal, then you should probably drop it. However, you can wait to drop it until skill points become scarce and use it to make money. After playing unguilded a couple months, I joined a guild that bought and sold resources (minerals, chemical, etc.). I bought some harvesters, mined for minerals, and sold them for a flat fee to the guild leader. Going up the surveying tree of artisan increases your survey radius. I ended up running six or seven heavy harvs and made I serious amount of money. When my guild folded, I "retired" and started the combat professions. My nest egg pays for my habit of going through ubese jackets as well as consumable weapons.
I agree with getting novice medic in either case. Being able to heal yourself is great when there's no one else around.

I am still rather new, but last night I started a new character that was a Zabrakian, and I chose my first profession as Brawler, then trained in Marksman and Artisan, in the hopes of being pretty self sufficient.
I am thinking that I may not have chosen the right species or order of profession. When duking it out on for the first time I frequently get my health down to around 50%, and trying to sample for resources as an artisan drains my green Mind bar very quickly and I frequently need to rest.
Should I chose a different species or are there any tips on what I can do to "last" longer for sampling stuff?
Well, I'm not sure you are asking in the right place but I like to help new people so I'll give this a stab. There isn't really a self sufficient class, or group of classes. Noone has enough skill points to make his/her own weapons/armor/food/spices/buffs they need to compete at higher levels. I would suggest that you find a guild. Go onto your server's board and post that you area new player and looking for a guild. If ya don't mind me asking, what server are you playing on? A guild will be able to help you through the first few levels, and may be able to help you out with equipment and other stuff.
Also do you want to be a rebel or an Imperial because that might make a significant difference on your race. If you plan on becomming an imperial, then I highly suggest that you reroll to a human character due to the "alien penalties" that you will suffer as a Zabrakian.
If you play on Chilistra, and are looking to become an Imperial send me an email ingame (my ingame name is Cryonax) I will do my best to help get you started and answer any questions that you have as they come up.
Thanks for the response. I really dont know if I want to go Rebel or Imp yet. I started out on Corbantis last night so it wouldnt be a big deal to wipe and start over again. I also play after 11pm on weekdays as I work a midshift so not as many people seem to be on but I will have a look around.
Thanks again, if I make up a character on your server Ill try to look ya up.

Drop Artisan, Pick up medic and scout.
Start out on the unarmed path first (no money needed for weapons) harvesting away...making meds with what you harvest. This will let you stay out and fight longer.
Now start doing missions, as you progress through the unarmed tree you'll be able to get some better missions. You can then sell your harvest, do missions to start equipping yourself with weapons.
Keep an eye on the stats from your harvest (Remember docs need avian meat and herbivore meat). There is really good credits to be made on killing kaduu and such when their resources are good.
Now your taking advantage of being able to equip yourself correctly. Move on and start the marksmen branch of it. Now that you have some credits get some good weapons. It's all down hill from there.

They should actually bring that back. HOWEVER having the unarmed prereq allows us the right to ***** about our melee defenses.
