Commando Archive
Thread: Blast from the past.
Back in beta commando's were the unwanted step children. We had no real purpose. Our weapons didn't exist - then our class's trees were completely re-written into what they are now with about 2 weeks remaining, then our weapons shortly came and the rush for weapons began ( well... not really there was about 4 commando's in beta, myself a friend and I assume there had to be a few more =] ). My friend and I recieved our weapons from our weaponsmith friend ( who I haven't seen in retail, which is very sad - quite possibly one of the coolest people I had met). We immediately dueled and firesingle2'd each other and laughed as we both burnt to incap, to incap, to incap, to death. Then we ran out of the cloning facility naked and ran the 2.5km back to our corpses. I never had more fun in swg until the members of my guild and myself had a 8 person boxing match ( everyone /duels each other ) which lasted for a good 45 minutes.
Then retail began and I joined the same server I was on in beta ( Bria ) and my same characters name from beta ( Dizko Roota ). I quickly rushed through marksman and unarmed ( it was more of a pain in the butt because they made experience in ratio to the damage done per mob so group exp was a pain but that's the breaks. I quickly went to Lok and ran langlatch missions until I made novice commando. I was one of the first on the server ( the previously mentioned friend commando from beta beat me to it
Until that point there were virtually no commando's including the LP fix. Being a commando actually felt like an accomplishment and was something to be proud of - until about 9/6/03 ( 2 days after the 'big patch' when people saw our power in the flame thrower ). Although I had mastered commando before the patch, a few days after I didn't feel that unique in my profession.
And well...... you know what happened after 9/4/03 so I don't need to continue ( no one knew of a commando before that date but shortly after EVERYONE knew about them
This post may seem somewhat of a rant to you people but if you actually think about it I'm looking for an answer to one question. Incase you haven't picked up on it, it is:
What can we do to make our profession feel unique or special again? ( And this includes novice THROUGH master )
Note: I'm aware there were less people back then who played and have since caught up so I'm not looking for "It's not possible because many people have indeed caught up" type of answer. Just an overall what can we do? Or perhaps, what can we ask the devs to do to help us?
I was a Commando in beta 3 for a long while (well, it felt long), but posied at the edge of commando after release (I got Master Marksman and unarmed 4 reasonably fast in any event). Since I was paying for it then, I didn't want to get back into the class until it was fixed.
It was easy to tell if it was fixed by listening to hear if Garibaldi d'Alia was cursing the devs over Team Speak. Once he left I had to just watch and wait. That's why I can be so philosophical about the melee-damage nerf. I remember from beta when the class was truly terrible, so it's hard to see the nerf as all THAT bad.
ya i was the first master commando on radiant and i felt unique to but every one would laught at me
when i chalenged them to a duel lol now every one wont even duel me lol
and i like to see master commandos be seen as wow awsome how the heckyou get that
I do feel special I play on Tempest and I have seen only 1 other Master Commando. Alot of grenadeers and novice commandos. I could be mistaken some people might just not display there title but that makes me feel extremly special.
Also I feel special when I get tells asking if my group is going to raid there town because this guy doesnt want to loose his atst's. That kind of respect is nice to have and makes me feel special.
With all the problems of the commando lines I for one am happy with everything.
Ya I agree the perstige has gone from being a Commando to being a master... that way we can show everyone that this is my profession and I am not dabloing cause the FT kicks ass...
Don't get me wrong.. i have no problem wiht dabblers.. but as it stands they are the down fall of commando's... well not completly... but if they nrefed us the way that pistoleers got nerfed (and rightly so on them, but we just need to be fine tuned) then all of the daboling would quite.
We just need to be fine tuned.. have the bugs and breaks fixed then being a Master Commando will be the thing of ahh again... as it should be!
