Hi Guys,

I am just about to get my Marksman Master and was just wondering (After reading some of the problems with Commando prof from this forum) is this the best time to take this profession as there seems to be loads of things wrong. Also I have heard people refer to something called DOTS, could someone please tell me what this is?

Thanks Morgano

A DOT is an old abbreviation for Damage Over Time. When we use flamethrower specials we set something on fire and the target "burns" taking additional damage every 6 or so seconds. As for becoming a Commando it's a fun profession however the field tactics tree and heavy acid rifle tree are not working well atm. There is a 2.5 x melee damage penalty for anyone that wields a heavy weapon, if you are willing to work around this by either grouping full time, using a pet, and/or taking up a secondary weapon to switch to I would not reccommend trying to play solely as a commando right now. The smuggler tree is a nice back up, medic, pistoleer. Carbineer is a painful way to go but is viable as a support class for commando skills. Hope this helps.

Depends what you're after. If you want a good PVP class, I'd move along. While you often hear about the uber flamethrowing one-shot PVP god commandos, they're actually a myth. We do have the capacity to one-shot kill in PVP, but the thing is that that one shot lands so inconsistantly that we're often dead before we get a second chance, should the first one miss. Most skilled PVPers will stay out of your 16m special range, and when that happens your sunk. Honestly, only poor PVPers consistantly lose to Commandos. Bounty Hunter remains the best PVP class all around.

In PVE, it's something of a toss up. In groups we can be MVPs for our front-loaded damage, where we have medics on hand to heal us, and CHs on hand to tank for us. We do wicked damage with our specials, and so long as we're not tanking we can get them off without too much risk. The problem comes when we do tank. Soloing with a commando is a very risky business. The 2.5x melee damage modifier when you're holding a heavy weapon makes evena commando fully decked out in composite easy prey for most creatures. You'l definitely need a secondary class to help you solo, and some good suggestions are CH, so you can have a good tank all the time, Smuggler, so you can Feign Death when the going gets tough and let your DOT finish them off, and TKA, so you can go unarmed between specials and use the Unarmed Toughness mods to help you soak the damage.

Oh, and also understand that by being a commando, that means you're using a flamethrower. Heavy Acid Rifle is completely borked, as are all the thrown weapons under Field Tactics. The consumable heavy weapons are good, but since you get a limited number of shots, and they cost several tens of thousands of credits apiece, you're not likely to use them as your regular weapon. We have a cert for the ugly, if decently powerful and very flashyLauncher Pistol, but no stat mods or specials for its use. You could theoretically go Commando/Pistoleer(/Smuggler) and use pistol specials with the LP...but honestly you're probably better off with a DX2 in that case.

Hope that helps.
