First, let me say that I am not, by any means even close to a Master Commando. I am a career (master) Squad Leader, who chose low level commando for it's supportive capabilities. Namely, after checking statistics on heavy weapons. I've taken Field Tactics 3 for the ranged damage mitigation, and Support weapons 1 for the heavy particle cannon.

Here's what I've learned about heavy support weapons:

Well made rocket launchers are hard to find, but if made properly can be crucial to taking down enemy base turrets.

Heavy particle cannons are best used as antipersonnel weapons in support of a larger squad.

What many of the people on this forum fail to take into account is that heavy support weapons have a quite acceptable accuracy rating if used as intended.

If you want to hit reliably and effectively with any heavy weapon, you must first be sure that you can maintain proper distance from the target. Heavy support weapons have a very limited effective range, reliable in a window of about 7 meters nearer or farther than the Ideal range of the weapon. I can only comment on the two heavy weapons I've been able to use, but when used, I've had nothing but good results.

Rocket Laucher: Take firing position approximately 40 meters away from the target, and kneel. You'll average about an 85% hit rate.

Heavy Particle Cannon: Take firing position approximately 45 meters from the target, and kneel. You'll average about a 90% hit rate.

Summary:

Don't expect to use a support weapon as primary armament, or utilize it effectively without proper tactical maneuvers. Don't expect to use support weaponry in a non-support role.
