I mastered commando yesterday right before logging. My main character is a crafter (chef, architect, artisan) with no combat skills. I thought it would be fun to have an alt on combat. What fun! hehe So I am now a master Commando and master Swordsman. I love this combo.

My question is simply where I can go from here? I didn't think about what to do 'next'. (please forgive me, no flames [pun intended, hehe].

I read this forum and it sounds like PvP is a logical place to go, perhaps faction raids. I'm all for that. I am thinking of walking to the nearest faction town and offering my services but wonder if I have the right skills? If you were in my shoes and proffesions, what would you do?

I live on Dantooine, Ahazi by the way if anyone has a group to recommend. Thanks!

Your next step is to fill in the holes that being a Master Commando leaves you with...Commandos have lots of close range damage, but slow and range restricted to melee range...This leaves Commandos without ranged attacks. Commandos also have low Melee defenses when compared to some other ranged professions, and especially when you look at various professions forced to fight in Melee range...

Melee Defenses are most important if you play more PvE then PvP...if this is the case I'd look at enhancing your template with TKA or Fencer...

Ranged attacks are important in PvP since most folks know to beat a Commando by staying outside our range...To combat this strategy, look into Rifleman or Pistoleer (maybe even a Dirty Tactics tree of Smuggler)...

Also be aware of the enemies your are attacking, especially in the new content area of the games (Geon Lab, Corvette, Tuskin Executioner, etc)...be sure to examine them and observe their Heat Resists compared to their Acid Resists (or even their Blast resists)...this will help you to know which weapon is the best to use...

Personally, I have yet to find a place where Commandos truely rock over other professions...PvP is fun, but we don't often win (Commandos aren't really built well for PvP on their own...we have to rely on dabbled skills to win)...Big battles are another story...we can have fun running around flaming groups and using our RLs from a safe distance...

Most importantly....come back here anytime you have something to share or a question to ask....Some Commandos can't resist flaming folks (the Fire is in their blood), but most of use love to read other's input and personal takes on our profession...

Congrats on your achievement and enjoy...

OK Garvin, thanks for the input. I'm gonna start looking thru the trees and see which path might appeal to me more. I need to ask a couple more questions tho. also keep in mind that I have played this game without any experiencein combat until I started the path the master commando. If my questions are simple, please bear with me. Thanks.

1. What do you mean when you say that commandos are 'without ranged attacks'? I'm sure I don't quite understand.I know I can stand about 64m meters away and start shooting fireballs, or use overcharge shot. Then at about 20m I can finish them off with the flames. (I have been fighting critters of course). Is the Acid Rifle the same, 64m? Do the other ranged skills you mention go farther?

2. In regards to Melee, how would TKA or Fencer be different from Swordsman, which I am now.My 'normal' attack is to stand back and shoot fireballs, then flame when within range. If things get dicey or the whole mob turns on me at once, I flamecone them all for the DOT, then switch to swords and use an area attack at cose range with the sword. Does that fulfill your point on Melee or would TKA/Fencer give me a different advantage?

These are the main questions I have. I'll be in the skill trees if you need me....

Thanks!

I'm about to Master as well and would like to know the best complimentry professions for PvE. I would like to keep novice Medic and novice scout for the heals and harvesting. But after that I'm at a loss. Congrats on Mastering I thinks its going to be fun.

I've recently re-mastered commando and am working this out atm too. I am thinking of opting for the following combo:

Commando: master

Pistoleer: 4.0.4.0

TKA: 4.3.0.4

The secondaries are set up to be a purely defensive template (based on using commando as offense). The Pistoleer gives some sweet defensive modifiers, and the TKA supplements nicely giving decent defence at any range. Plus, the 2 (aside from the range of the attackers, are specific to the TYPE of attack and give bonuses for each). I have yet to try this all out yet, but it seems (on paper) to be the best bet. Note: the 0's in the Pistoleer and TKA are the offensive lines. Thoughts anyone?

I'm combining TKM with Commando at the moment too. I like Teras Kasi for a couple reasons: Good defenses, good melee (although only 1 damage type, Kinetic), and most of all: Meditate. Kind of like having a mini-medic within this profession. I'm hoping to be quite self-reliant with this combination.

Overcharged shot is a Marksman Special...I meant specifically our own specials...While overcharged shot can be nice, it speeds up the degrade of your weapon and isn't as powerful as our regular specials (which is where our power is really at)...You can't use any Commando granted special outside of 16m of your target (although sometimes it appears to work at 20m but that is due to lag)....

2. In regards to Melee, how would TKA or Fencer be different from Swordsman, which I am now.My 'normal' attack is to stand back and shoot fireballs, then flame when within range. TKA and Fencer both come with more Defenses...One thing I suggest to everyone is to go to bloodfin.org...download the SWG Profession Calculator...Create various templates and check out the defenses...The other reason I love TKA especially is for Meditate...It heals all your wounds (including mind) outside of battle...But really it all comes down to your personal preference.

Anyway, use the Calculator at the above site, examine your defenses vs power vs accuracy vs speed, etc...It's a great way to map out your whole template and figure out where to stick those remaining pts...

OK, yes, now I understand what I was missing. I was looking mostly at the offense side of things and wasn't thinking about the defenses that are available in the other classes. Thanks!! This will help alot!!
