I know that getting some TKA helped my defense considerably. I was tired of a NPC in a dungeon somewhere getting in my face. And killing me in a few blows. Definitely get at least novice medic, but remember there is a giagantic lag in between specials of the flamethrower, so pop the heal in your combat queue right after you hit a special if you are fighting something tough. I also got some smuggler for spices, and Dirty Fighting. This helps me in tuff battles to, I have feign death.
