The acid rifle tree requires heavy weapon xp which you can obtain from using any commando weapon except grenades (which only give combat xp). The acid rifle is a poor clone of the flame thrower so the best thing to do is go up the flame thrower tree first, then use it to grind the xp for the acid rifle line. There are many master commandos that have only used the acid rifle once or twice. The best thing to do with your acid rifle is put it in your bank and leave it there until after the revamp when it moght be useful.
