Thread: Commando: Lessons from the Masters
Greetings, Commandos,
Okay, I was sitting around with a few friends the other night, watching the cheap domestic beer disappear and chicken wings turn into bony piles... so basically another night out, but as designated driver, I had the opportunity to really enjoy my chicken wings, have a pitcher of coke all to myself, and score some 'responsible adult male' points with the cute waitress. Anyway, topics generally fluxed wildly between sports, online games, the cute waitress, and bad movies, so it was almost inevitable that the conversation would get a bit blurred. My friends know I play Commando in SWG but other than knowing we don't wear underwear and carry heavy weapons, they didn't know much about the profession. Between attempts to get me to come back to EQ (Aw, man... we've got a full suit of Annoying Heraldic for you if you come back! You should play warrior again, they actually suck less now!), they proceeded to give me hints and tips as to what I should look to get 'emproveed' in the class. As I have known these guys for awhile, I generally respect their opinions but I will warn you, this was long about the fifth pitcher. For the sake of brevity and the Dragnet Clause (names changed to protect the almost-innocent), I will simply call them Bob, Fred, and Doug. For sake of reference, Bob plays EQ as a shadowknight, Fred plays wizard and rogue, Doug left eq for a long time but has since returned and raised his druid to annoyingly high levels in a short period of time. Here were their takes on Commando.
Bob: Ya know what you need for that Commando thingy? Grenades... big ones.
Me: We have grenades... weaponsmiths make them but they take a snotload of resources and hardly anyone produces them in any kind of useful number.
Fred: Cool, what kind of grenade launchers do they have?
Me: Er... none, you have to throw them... pass me those inferno wings again.
Fred: No grenade launchers? Sheesh... *passes tray* keep those things on your side of the table, clears my sinuses...
Bob: So what do you get? *pours another beer*
Doug: I'd like to get the cute waitress...
Me: She's seeing someone, I asked... *picks up a sinus clearer* Anyway, we get flamethrowers which are really good, acid rifles that are basically ripoff flamers without the DoT feature, grenades... and heavy weapons... things like rocket launchers, big cannons, that kind of stuff...
Bob: So kind of like an EQ wizard? Big guns?
Me: *swallow mouthful of chicken wing* Ug... mmhm... sort of, *grabs coke* We do a lot of damage but we've got to get close...
Doug: I'd like to... *gazing at cute waitress*
ALL: Shut up, Doug... *group chuckles*
Me: Kind of sucks, but they're getting rid of the part where hand to hand damage goes up against youwhen you're using your heavy weapons.
Fred: Carry a chainsaw.
Bob: Chainsaw? What the hell are you talking about? *pours another beer*
Fred: No, really, carry a chainsaw... like Ashe in Evil Dead... that way they get too close and BBBBBBBZZZZZZOOOOOOWWWW *knocks plate of mostly-eaten wings to the floor*
Me: Sheesh, and you wonder why I tip the waitresses well when we go out... *apologetic smile to cute waitress as she rushes over*
Doug: *leans over to see down cute waitress' top*
Me: *back to conversation* Well, we need to practice unarmed skills, but other than a warcry stun thingy and intimidating... actually, the unarmed skills are a little weak unless you become a Teras Kasi... like a martial artist...
Bob: Oh, cool, I read that book from that guy... those guys were...
*conversation dissolves for 15 minutes, debating the virtues of TK vs Ninjitsu vs Kung Fu, another pitcher is brought, I drop the last bone on the plate*
Bob: So do pistoleers get like Gun-Fu moves?
Me: *still thinking about Yoda doing Tai-chi* Wha? Um... yeah, kinda... that's actually bounty hunters and their knockdown attacks, but pistoleers do snotloads of damage... actually most of the combat classes get knockdowns or different stance change attacks, but not Commandos.
Fred: So why are you playing commando?
Doug: Hey, you said she was dating someone, what about the bartender?
Me: No idea... er... actually, I like playing Commando, you are really solid against just about everything, just have to know what your doing, different weapon types and whatnot... No idea was on the bartender.
Doug: Let me go get another pitcher... *stands up and swaggers over to the bar*
Bob: So basically you're a damage machine, but you don't really do anything else.
Fred: Yeah, sounds like you're an EQ wizard to me.
Me: It's not that bad... I mean I still had enough skill points left to pick up a bit of Creature Handler... had to drop medic tho...
Bob: Oh... So you're a magician?
Fred: Yeah, EQ Mage... big gun and a pet.
Me: No, I... well, kind of...
Doug: *staggers back and sloshes a bit on the chicken wings* We need a new bar with more single women.
So that's it... Without CH, we're EQ wizards... with CH, we're EQ magicians. *sighs* Next time, I get to drink.

Force Unsensitives - Pure and simple as a hammer to the forebrain.
I guess the weird thing is, I was a freakin' wizard in EQ.
Ahh well, something to be said about the big boom.
Nerutef- 3 4 4 1 Master Commando in Training
Yeah, so was I... and I played Magi too... *groans* I also played warrior, sk, paladin... actually everything but ranger or druid...
I do think the chainsaw & grenade launcher would add some nice flexibility... Mostly the chainsaw... But then I yell 'Listen up you primative screw-heads!' every time my guild has a meeting.

Nice story ![]()
Yeah, ranged combateers in SWG can be compared to the mages of Fantasy games. We're a little better equiped since we can all wear the same armor.
Commando is a profession thats only reached 50% of its potential. Lots of improvements can be made to make this working profession even better.
that would be cool.
great now im on Evil dead SWG combinations lol
Getting the necrinomicon(sp?) and calling evil pets would be cool ^^;;
oooooo Ashes medievil car with top rotating blades would be cool romping through corelia wilds, chopping up grondas..........*cough* i need sleep oO
is this coherent?
i was a Ranger, rangers are the bomb and always will be!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
also, i did not really get the point of yer friends comparing EQ to SWG, totally different........
was a good story though! lol
