Thread: the unofficial where's Garvin? thread
But seriously, please come back from wherever you are, we need you to aid Starnick in his valiant efforts to blow up SOE headquart.....I mean, get our profession fixed.
I think Garvin has been MIA since the CU went live.
SOE finally lost it and hired snipers to silence him! ![]()

Well the last he visited the boards was the 17th, so he's most likely silent but not seen.
It's a macro!
It would be a little saddening to see someone who was so enthusiastic about this game slowly drift away. I think he was secretly very angry with SOE, for Screwing the Alpha Tester and basically really not making the CU all it could of been. The worst part is we were one of the profession who were to be specially looked at, given lots of attention and make sure we worked. Well now look. It's nice were generally civil and never a FOTM, but this is sickening. If Commando just stays a "Gear" profession I will probably change my template and hope Commando in 2006 is fixed or simply leave. I'm not sure they will fix it. I'm really not. And everyone's spouting this garbage how great it's gonna be when they fix up the GCW. I didn't even see the Devs add the Weapons Mode thing, though interesting somewhat glad they didn't. I'm left with a very strong impression the CU wasn't finished much less ready for live by any means. Granted it's interesting, but I see inbalances already, and professions still being forgotten about or screwed over.
Maybe I was stupid. Maybe I was dumb for thinking the way the Devs were gonna work on this game was gonna change.
(Rant Time)
Ok yes it's nice not spamming "I Win" buttons anymore or TKMs ruling the Battlefields and Ranged being more beneficial in Combat. However "Root" attacks are lame. Honestly who in the heck just magically stops walking because someone shoots at them? Yea you dance if someone shoots at your feet, but nobody ever in their damn right mind just stands there like an idiot firing a weapon. That's why I thought AI was generally dumb in that they stand and shoot as someone punched them to death or sabered. AI should know how to kite Melee folks just not really well. For instance TKM rebel runs up to Stormtrooper. Stormtrooper is better firing a gun so he runs! TKM can catch up and smack him now and then. ST can attempt to KD Melee folk or perhaps try to kneel to get a better shot. Thus Stormtrooper eventually dies. Now it's just Stormtrooper shoot and follow.
Root attacks to me are perhaps just as pathetic as the KD Dizzy Combo. Except the tables have been turned against Melee.
Let's nevermind the fact that NPCs aren't using appropriate weapons and are still warping and going through walls because AI couldn't be upgraded to work around terrain much less seem intelligent. And now the Hate System is the same. They actually downgraded this. See animals once they finished you either killed you or left you for dead. But the instant you got back up they wouldn't attack you unless they were aggressive. And this way had you lost before you could rest and heal up going unnoticed so long as you didn't move.
However move or attack again and that creature would instantly recognize and attack you like a real animal. Real animals wouldn't keep knocking you out they would either kill you or hurt you so bad to be no longer a real threat.
The sad part about SWG now is most agressive stuff in the game won't even bother you unless you get real close or have a bad faction standing with them.
NPC AI is just as bad. Now NPCs shouldn't death blow a lot but aggressive ones should yes, but more then animals. And as soon as you move they should go hey that's the guy from before get him!
But they don't. Now NPCs are dumb as heck. Plus the Consider is all powerful now. That's not a Consider System it's a guide how to play. Not a suggestion which it should be. You will never defeat a Consider Purple a few levels above, which isn't so bad except the fact that you and 3 indenticals probably stand no chance. There is way to much emphasis on Level. Personally I hate it. Why? Cause HAM does just as good as a job. I was fighting a Level 50 Rebel Guard Consider Green to me right now and he had 14K HAM and easily deafeted me. Clearly HAM is still important. Honestly it really never bothered me having things with 100K HAM. It was more what had that much power. SBDs for example were ridiculous. They were never that all powerful. The way the use to they could slaughter 50 Stormtroopers or an AT-ST by themselves. But guess what? They still can. Stormtroopers are only level 25 which means for most level 80 people there only a threat when in groups of 6 or more.
So my question, besides eliminating Buffs for the most part and uber armor what has changed? Ok professions have supposedly been balanced.
It's sad that if your not whatever level your screwed. And don't expect to take missions and fight everybody. Nope no you gotta pull them out one by one like a sniper. Yea that's real fun. I had more fun when I took on all three NPCs at a mission and counted on luck and good timing and use of attacks to win. Now it's just hit these buttons in the right time, and don't fight anything else. That's boring. And as soon as you get multiple Mobs on you close to your level your dead. Kind of boring if you ask me. All the chance and herorism is gone. It's all standard and very strict.
Trust me I want grouping to be the better way to get XP, but it should only speed it up for you somewhat, not so much that a person who groups a day or two will advance 4 times as much as someone on their own. However I don't like seeing anyone proceed to mass kill 6 or more Stormtroopers and another person die in one shoot. Absolute rubbish.
For me there are two possible choices one of which needs to be made.
The first and easiest wiuld be to widden the level range so that something 20 levels below is still Consider Green or for Something to be Consider Pruple has to be 15 levels above you. This way you widden the threat of things to very proficient Comabt Folk, but also limit the number of things that one will one hit kill new folk or non-combat folk. Plus you make killing some things still actually provide XP.
The other solution is to go back to an all HP system. Personally I like this best. No more level determing crap. Nope level just gives you the rough idea. Instead knowing how powerful enemies can hit how much of your attacks they can take will become important. No more simply look at the little number. Part of me liktes this, because if you truley balanced all combat professions and gave them roles to which they would be beneficial in you could have people who tank and nuke. Granted I never want to see battles with any NPC lasting longer then a minute or two. But is it really so hard to make it so a player of Master Comabt Profession is basically one on one a match for an SBD or 3 Stormtroopers. Thus 3 Stormtroopers could be a match for a player or an SBD.
Do you see what I 'm getting at? I wanted something like that. Why is something like that so impossibly hard to come about? I know I'm wasting my breath, and have gone way way off topic, but dangit I wrote up pretty much the entire workings for a system like this and no one bothered so much to consider it. I want a Rancor to be Death to anyone. The AT-ST to be a feared Machine. The NS places to require large groups. The Corvette to be hard but doable by a group of smart players and not just those how sneak around. I want a squad of Stormtroopers to be a threat to anyone. I don't want an Stormtrooper to be invincible to a newly trained Marksman but rather a very difficult fight, which may seem undoable. I want a Crafter to be seen by thugs and run for his life and make it. I want someone who is a Master of Combat Professions to run into a group of thugs and get beaten should there be enough of them.
That's what I want to see SWG like. Is that so wrong, so impssible I ask? Is it so wrong for the game to be balanced for Combat Profession and Work! Why must Masslaughter be a part of all RPGs, which is lame. Why must there be God-Like things requiring tons of people to take down? Why must such a huge emphasis be placed on leveling/grinding up your character? Why can't people just be allowed to adaventure without made feeling to work. Why must houses clutter the landscape? How dumb is it to make games that target idiots and little nerds how have nothing better to spend their money and use all their time to become the supposed best, when you could have a fun interactive wrold where RP is encouraged. Where even that new Gunslinger is a threat to the best of the best. Where breaking into that bnker is exciting with your friends. Where hunting animals can actually be fun. Where there is mystery and exploration not just POIs. Where the EMpire is an oppressive Goverment with small bands of Rebels fighting the oppression. Where missions are more then just go here and kill, kill, kill. An game where it really seems like your in SW universe. The Empire is cracking down on Rebels assaulting their posts. And Rebels are on the run dong what they can. An ever-changing ever evolving world.
I have had great hopes for SWG. But the CU seems like a step forward and a step backward. And seeing Commando now angers me beyond words!
Forgive me for my Off-Topic self.

Nah, WoW has a lot more content to offer.
I would be pretty mad too since up until this time commando has had only one useful weapon and limited flexiblity; then seeing changes on the way that would fix grenades, make all heaviy weapons useful and so on. And then when it goes live, guess what? We have one useful weapon and now we lost our AoE.
Oh wait, I am pretty mad.

I was wondering the same thing about where he has been. My guess is he is disappointed about playing the CU on TC and talking up all the cool Commando fixes coming our way and then when the CU went live most of the new changes were incomplete or broken.

The sad thing is, Commando was better of, IMHO, preCU than postCU...
I'm still waiting on that 5 rating for damage to make sense.
