Thread: Back from a break, need template advice.
NewJedi wrote:I've been on hiatus for about six months, and now I'm back, playing my Commando alt -- and completely confused. I'm 3040, but I can't equip the Flamethrowers I used to use. I'm back to using my launcher pistol. My specials...well, I'm not sure what specials I have. I'm only Combat Level 30 or 35 because my remaining skill points used to be invested in Master Politician and Master Marksman. Now that Pol costs no skill points, I find myself with 77-odd spare skill points, which is great. So I have a few questions:1. Should I stick with Commando? I originally went into it looking for a big ranged damage-dealing profession that might support soloing. Now it seems the opposite: a greater emphasis on AoE, which implies a need to group.Yes we are better with AOE. Commando by itself gets no specials what so ever, they are built into the guns. Definatly get some other profesion (rifleman if you want long range damage, pick up some carbines for the "Stoping Shot" which will stop the enemy in its place.) Pick up one of our long range weapons like the HAR and blind the enemy while doing what ever special your using.2. Is it a good profession for grinding Jedi? My guy is Force-Sensitive and has done maybe 3 or 4 quests in the village. No Glowhead talk here please.3. If I stick with it, what other combat profession goes well with it? Should I ditch Master Marksman and pick up Smuggler? Keep MM and go for BH?Id say Master Commando, Master Rifleman, and 2 trees of carbine (Stoping shot and warning shot). That whould make you effective in PvP (good damage AoE states and lots of damage) and good in PvE (long range root with high damage and Kenetic armor)
Dont become a jedi, there are already way wya way wya wya wyaywaywaywyawyawyaywaaaaaaay to many.
Please stick to REAL proffesions.
To answer your questions however:
1. Should I stick with Commando? I originally went into it looking for a big ranged damage-dealing profession that might support soloing. Now it seems the opposite: a greater emphasis on AoE, which implies a need to group.
Right now, its a bad idea using our weapons in group enviroments. Against single targets we're not great as our weapons "power-up" primarily through AoE, we're no longer front-loaded damage...thats rifleman. We still can do some good damage compared to non-damage dealers, but sometimes still get outdamaged. With AoE, its broken with 0 or 1 in splash damage, hence why we're more harmful to groups than good.
2. Is it a good profession for grinding Jedi? My guy is Force-Sensitive and has done maybe 3 or 4 quests in the village.
BECAUSE of the abuse with grenades, we now have 18 second base timers...grenades are WORSE in damage than before, they have 30 meter radiii too. Some grenades have secondary timers to prevent spammage of the same grenade, like the thermal det has an additional 24 or something secondary timer but we think thats bugged (40-50 seconds to throw two thermal dets) as other grenades like the CL 54 proton grenade has only a 8 second secondary timer between spam throws. Only good grenades do, are that they dont kill you anymore...and stacks are still 5. Also, the states our grenades generate are lousy (snare = 1 second long)
3. If I stick with it, what other combat profession goes well with it? Should I ditch Master Marksman and pick up Smuggler? Keep MM and go for BH?
Either BH or Carbineer for good defenses/damage, and either smuggler/pistoleer for roots/crowd control. In PvP (and PvE in some cases), commando's are VERY awesome with our AoE roots, KDs, etc...
Thanks for the advice. I'm glad you mentioned Carbineer. My other character is currently a Carbineer but may surrender it for other things. It would make it easier to do that if I resolved to pick up Carbineer with this character.
Sorry for mentioning Jedi. I haven't really played this game since last year, so I don't know what's going on with that.
only .001% true Commando..
10% almost jedi......

NP, I believe Carbineer really suits commando real nicely. BH may be better dueling, but Carbineer compliments us more nicely with the KD, crowd control/posture control, and battle armour (as well as carbines, which are cool, heh)
My template is: M. Commando/M. Carbineer/0404 Pistoleer actually. Really nice, and I can solo with it.
Now, with the FS/Jedi stuff, you're forgiven
Heres essentially my combat Toolbars:
I have my elite carbine, plasma FT, Lightning Beam cannon, FWG5, all 4 state recoveries, all 5 run/sit/kneel/prone/stand functions, 1 slot for "mount", 1 for my flashspeeder (quick get-a-ways), 1 for a Stim-D
And then these specials:
Range Shot - My auto-attack
Burst Shot - AoE stun shot (Pistoleer)
Crippling Shot - Slows down target (Carbineer)
Stopping Shot - Roots target (Pistoleer)
Charge Shot - KD's target (Carbineer)
Legshot - Primary damage special (Carbineer)
Disarming Shot - Prevents opponent from firing a weapon for a few seconds (pistoleer)
Full Auto Single - AoE, medium damage shot (carbineer)
The last special listed I interchange that with fanshot (does the same thing, and its pistoleer)...and may go with suppression shot when that is fully working again. This is the slow thats expendable and I switch around every now and then. Since I use carbines mainly atm, and will use them after our weapons get fixed too...I may keep an AoE special there.
My Template is M. Commando/M. Carbineer/0404 Pistoleer, so all the carbineer specials I have the master versions, while Pistoleer only the improved versions (advanced disarming/stopping shot are master pistoleer). Its a nice set-up, well rounded as I get a variety of specials that allow me to support groups as well as solo on my own and allow me to do good damage at the same time. Plus I can wear my Clone Commando Armour or some recon if I wanted to

Cool, glad to hear Carbineer is such a nice fit. I didn't realize Carbineer specials could work with a Commando's heavy weapon equipped. Or did I misinterpret you guys?
Are there people who prefer MBH/MCommando over MCarbineer/MCommando?
Although some carbine specials say they require an automatic weapon, they can be used with HW.
