I was a master commando, I used a Speed Sliced flamethrower (3.1 seconds)and speed sliced heavy acid rifle (3.6 seconds)(since speed is everything, and when your weapons are that slow between specials, it just makes sense)

My Flame Single 2's have done 12,000 Damage

My Average Acid Single 2 was around 3,000-4,000 damage

In reality the acid rifle does about 1/2 or 1/3 less damage than the flamethrower does. I don't know if this is because the damage multipliers for acid rifle specials are really lower, or what. This is why most people use the flamethrower - it can be crafted with a lower unslicedspeed than the heavy acid rifle and does way more damage.

The only suitable situation for the Heavy Acid rifle is when a target has low resist to acid and very high or %100 resist to heat.

The HAR is virtually useless. Even on high heat resistant targets, the DoT will end up causing greater overall damage most of the time... And a DX2 can outdamage the HAR.

I think there is one or two mobs in the entire universe that are 100% resistant to heat and not acid(hehe there are alot of them that are highly resistant to acid and almost no heat) in which case it would take longer to kill them with a dot than it would to kill them with a HAR, so it has uses for when you need to take pot shots at things or want to shoot fish in a barrel.

if they made it Heavy AP or Medium AP it would solve alot of issues with it.

The damage modifier on the specials being lower, the delay being higher, the insane HAM cost, and the lack of DoT also detract quite a bit (comparing it as is to the FT anyways... I'd rather see it as an actual rifle some day myself)

Much of this has already been said, but I just wanted to recap...

Problems with the HAR:

  • On average (non-special) it does around 100 less damage then the FT.

  • On average (non-special) the weapon is slower then the FT by around .7 in speed

  • The specials of the HAR are identical to the specials of the FT yet they are significantly weaker

  • The HAR has a significantly higher HAM cost then the FT

  • The HAR shares the same restrictions as the FT (range and delay on specials)

  • The HAR has no DoT on any of it's specials

  • Most high level NPC's with high Heat resists also have high Acid Resists

  • The HAR Tree costs more xp then the Flame Tree

  • Like the FT, the HAR has no AP

  • Can not use typical "Rifle" specials with this weapon

With all that being said, what you end up with is a weapon that is only really useful when fighting an opponent with High Heat resists but low Acid resists, which doesn't come up very often. Since that is strategically the only time to use the HAR, it definitely does not warrent it's own tree and does not deserve the higher xp cost. It's basically a weaker clone of the FT, sharing the same penalties, but not delivering as it should.

The HAR could be improves with AP andranged specials...And since it is a Rifle, it would be nice to be able to use rifle specials with this weapon. Basically, when it's all said and done, we focus on the Flame Thrower so much because SWG hasn't given us a good reason to focus on the HAR.

I hope that helps...

You really can't delete a thread (only the devs can) and I don't think this tread should be deleted...it brings up a valuable discussion for others with the same question as yours...

And you hit the nail on the head...None of us knows why HAR deserves it's own tree, especially a tree that costs more xp then the Flame tree...Most of us think the HAR and Flame tree should be merged into one tree and the extra tree be used for something like Unarmed Dirty Fighting...or an LP tree...or a new ranged weapon with ranged specials, etc...

It's one of our Top 5 issues...
