Hi Smo'ki...


First off...I have seen the plans for the Combat Revamp/Combat Balance and, while I can't confirm what is in there, I can confirm what IS NOT in there...There are NO fire/flame resistences coming...In fact, and this is just somethingI've discussed with various programmers, I have good reason to believe we have a great shot at getting our DoT INCREASED in power with the revamp...


As for our issues, I suggest you take a look at our various Top 5 threads as well as some of the other "issues" discussions that have been going on...I personally take all of these types of threads and make sure the Devs take notice...I've already revealed (with TH's blessing) that 3 out of 5 of our Top 5 issues are FIXED via the Combat Revamp...and it's possible we may get, at the very least, one more of those issues in there as well...I know 3 out of 5 doesn't seem like a lot, but the 3 I am thinking of will make such a difference that the other two we'd probably be willing to wait for...I'd love to tell you which 3 out of 5 but unfortunately I don't yet have TH's blessing to do so...


AI reaction ingame to a commando agro'ed with a flame thrower causes the AI to defend melee. Also melee force enhancments and not ranged weapons enhanceFT/HAR/LLC skills.... why is a flamethrower considered a melee wepaon??!? and if its intentional wheres our melee mitigation?


This is a bug...ALL RANGED WEAPONS are currently using FS Melee enhancements...it's not just us...


When the revamp is complete we will have reasons to be happy...we won't so much worry about 100% Heat resists because we won't have to rely so heavily on just our Flame Thrower...Heat resists are only a huge deal to us because all we really have is our FT...But what if we didn't have to rely on the FT so much, do you think we'd have as much of an issue with it? Personally, I like pushing for more options for us rather then lowering Heat Resists (although that's something I also push for...less heat resistent new content)...


Internally we will always, at lest for now, be a short ranged heavy weapon profession...BUT we will have options that will extend our Commando prowless to beyond 16m...


If you ever have issues that you feel like we aren't covering...by all means, please bring them to our attention for discussion...It's my job to make sure our issues get noticed by the Devs...

This community has always been blessed with great correspondants and garvin, you are no exception. /deepbow


I look forward to the future but dont wanna lose sight of the past. althought a nice alternative to the flamethrower would be a amazing addition to our profession, I dont want to lose the feel and abilites the flamethrower grants us. I guess my real point is this, we are already realy good. glitched but good so if we're getting better whats gonna get worse?


Guess we'll have to wait an see huh

Ok. The top five as of 4/7/04 from the Useful Posts link are:



1) Revamp the Heavy Acid Rifle. Remove ranged restriction, increase to AP3 (only Acid weapon currently in game without Armor Peircing), and combine with Flame Thrower Tree (see Launcher Pistol request for more details). HAR is weaker then FT, has no DoT, no AP, and suffers same restrictions as the FT yet costs more XP to grind the Acid Tree.

2) Revert Consumable Heavy Weapons back to using generic Heavy Weapon Speed and Heavy Weapon Accuracy skill mods. Consumable Heavy Weapons also need to be altered to AP3 (or at the very least AP2). Reversion will cause Bugged Heavy Weapon Skill Mod Attachments to once again work in game. Heavy Consumable weapons should be either increased to average of 60 or more shots, be reloadable (so we only have to slice them one time) or have higher Accuracy & Speed mods to compensate for price and rarity.

3) Grenades need to be altered and adjusted. Range needs to be increased to compare with Combat Medic (same principle), state effects added and HAM costs need to be lowered drastically (often incapps the user). Accuracy is extremely low when compared to damage done and range and should be raised to compensate. State effects can include Knockdown, stun, delay, blind, dizzy, and other. Higher level grenades should have some level of AP. Grenades also need to be increased to average 25 to 30 instead of current 5 per pack.

4) Melee Defenses need to be increased. Other elite professions, like Pistoleer, have higher Melee Defenses (Melee Defense and Def Vs) then Commando yet Commando is the only Ranged profession with all Specials have a Melee range restriction. Due to skill point cost and Melee Range restriction, Commando should have same or more Melee Defenses then any other Ranged Profession.

5) Launcher Pistol needs to be made a Heavy Weapon and not a Pistol. It needs Commando specials instead of using Pistol specials as well as LP speed and accuracy granted in a Commando tree of it's own (possibly replacing the HAR tree as mentioned above). AP needs to be added. The LP needs to be adjusted to apply the proper amount of damage when compared to it's accuracy, the amount of skill pts required to aquire the cert as well as it's speed. Currently this weapon is extermely low on balance.



Now all the disclaimer type stuff: When I say we "know" something is in there, it's not based on anything other than inference drawn from multiple posts over the past month (now called the "Revamp Document Dark Times"). Garvin has certainly NOT said anything is in or out of the CR.

If I'm not mistaken, we already "know": that #1 (new tree and Dev's know HAR is busted big) and #2 (we will have skill tapes) are in the revamp. That leaves a third item that will tide us over. That has to be #4, since not dying would be very nice. The extra item that COULD be included would be #3, since the devs acknowledge Grenades are bigly broken, but need a LOT of work (/sarcasm on: work=SOE not sure it will do it. /sarcasm off). Launcher Pistol #5 would be relatively easy for the devs to do, but nothing makes me believe they are doing anything on this topic, since it just hasn't come up in the last month.

/speculation off

That's my reading of tea leaves. People wanted a topic to discuss to make the Commando forums burn again, so give this a shot: What do you think? Which 3 of 5 would you guess? Because guessing is all we have. Well....guessing and the Flamethrower.

First off, I'de like to introduce myself


My ingame name is Smo'ki from the flurry galaxie. (used to be smoki mcpots but well you know) Ive been a commando since week one of release. I struggled thru the good times and the bad and never thought twice about my commando skills. always seemed like a given for me as i love explosions more than the next guy and hey.. the title is unparalelled.


I've been following all the news about the combat balance and commando revamp for, /cough some time now and I just have one thing to say... I cannot take another nerf. I see it coming and im sooo worried its not even funny. As i stand right now i can demolish people in one on one duels. my accuracy is nothing to complain about ( with a li help from my chef) and the speed issues are a thing of the past since i made a couple exceptional flamers. As it stands i truely believe commando properly played is one of (if not the) best all around profession in SWG for PVP and PVE...


Now this nerf of which i speak is the dreaded " resistance will reduce out dot damage" update that has been mentioned in various forums since this game was released onto live servers... its often been refered to as it pretained to bleeding DoT's however the implications for commando are scary. This has been mentioned (i think) by garvin quite sneakily in the form of somthing like " there will be many changes in the combat balance that will effect all professions"


Im also a lil worried that all of our issues are not getting addressed on this forum. simple things like "rocketlauncher speed mods do not apply" ( *tested and confirmed novice and master commando have the same firing rate.)

17m range on specials... and the ever annoying "out of range" auto miss that occurs when all professions engage a target and sucessfully hit however that target moved out of the max range of your weapon before the hit could register. Not to mention the ever pleasant " you have lost sight of your target" and the weapon decay and delay for 0 dmg that results.


Okay im gonna finish this before I lose sight of my point.

I've been commando a long time, and as a result have come ot terms with several things. one of which being that ive fallin in love with a ever mutating beast of a profession. But I cannot stand for some things, one of which would be a complete nerfage vs everything with 100% heat or close to it. ( every high con mob in the game?) So if this is coming you better give us plenty of time to brace for impact or no ones gonna be around when the poodoo hits the fan...
