I bought a HAR today, and wasn't very satisfied. So I am deciding on whether or not i will just tough it out until i gain enough xp to use some higher weps, or is the flamethrower a resonable purchase as a novice commando?

Untill you get flame1 I'd stick with the launcher pistol. It with the pistol skills you get from the marksman tree make it a good ranged weapon. The Flame Thrower is a great weapon but it misses alot at low lvls.
