Thread: Rifleman/Commando-Decent Template?

I posted something similar to this in the Rifleman forum, but it isn't getting many hits, so I figured I'd try here, from a Commando's perspective and see what turns up.

I was thinking that Master Rifleman and Master Commando would be good, because you have powerful attacks from far range and if the enemy closes in mid-range you can finish them off. Possibly investing some points into TKA, just in case they get into melee range.

What do you guys think?

In the current state of SWG... and in all honesty... with Master Rifleman, you don't need Commando. MAYBE a Shock Trooper/Flame IV/0040 Commando, but not Master.

Here's why:
* Field Tactics line & Grenades are unreliable in PvE combat. It is extremely deadly to yourself in PvP. You're more likely to incap yourself from your own grenades than damaging the opposing player.

* Heavy Weapons/Heavy Consumeable Weapons (Rocket Launchers, HPBC, etc.). Expensive consumeables that rarely hit. 'Nuff said. In reality, a Master Rifleman will do more damage immediately and over time than a very, very, very lucky Commando who can hit every shot. But there is no such thing as a lucky Commando that can reliably hit with these highly damaging weapons.

* Flame line/Flamethrower. The only tree you may be interested in. It's also our only reliable weapon. At Flame IV, you get Flamesingles 1 & 2, and Flamecone 1. You don't get the useful Flamecone 2, but that be ignored. Flame IV/Shock Trooper is good enough for many Commandos.

* Acid Rifle Specialization line/Hvy.Acid Rifle. Stay away from it. Just a pale copy of the Flamethrower but it has no DOTs.

You can Master Commando and Rifleman, and it will be okay. It won't be efficient use of your SPs though. If you do, I will guarantee that you will use your Rifles more than ANY of your Commando weapons. Also, realize that as a pure ranged fighter like Master Commando + Master Rifleman, you will be highly vulnerable to melee attacks in PvE and especially PvP.

If you still want Commando with Rifleman, I heartily recommend Master Rifleman and Commando 0040 (Flame IV). You can dump the remaining SPs into other useful support skills. As for the GCW (or what's left of it), a Master Rifleman will perform better against turrets and AT-STs than we can.

Maybe after the Combat Rebalance, I can then happily recommend Master Rifleman + Master Commando. But not now.
