Thread: Thoughts on dabbling...
well
dabbling has a dark and light side
the light, is we can create custom chars...like mine, im a master commando AND a musician!
the dark, when dabblers become more powerful or the same in power as one who was committed to master the profffession..thats just plain wrong
dabblers are to take good aspects from each proffession and combine them into a workable unique and well balanced one..like using TKA and Commando...but when a Flame IV dabbler is as powerful as a master commando, takes half of CH and becomes as powerful as a MCH, and takes all of TKA and becomes even MORE powerful since he didnt need to use up as many skills pts...now thats overstepping the border
a flame IV dabbler, needs to be weaker than a master commando overall..since the master completes flame training, along with HAR/hvy/field training and combines them into a higher level of play
but thats not the case anymore..now ppl just get flame IV to get a powerful weapon..which puts the ones who were committed and got master at a disadvantage..its more about: Why should they get the power like us, while spending 3/4 the less skill points (enabling them to get something else)? Shouldn't we be (masters) at LEAST a bit more powerful? after all..we DID master the entire proffession
in my opinion, its alot like giving a reward to the loyal TCers..an incentive to test...masters in some proffessions do not have enough incentives since just dabbling unlocks the power of the class...
in another example..if you mastered 7 proffessions to unlock jedi..how would you feel if someone only mastered 3 to unlock jedi? in the end you both become the same, but you did the more work...
..in fact...this leads into socialism and eventually communism (and unions)...where the ppl are not rewarded for doing more work..
Dabbling has its good and bad side. The thing I like about this game is the fact that you can be a mix of skills from a few professions instead of having to choose to master a path and stick to it. It allows for you to customize your character the way you want to be.
The bad side, however, is when the skills you pick start to make a bad influence in the game. The pistoleers and bounty hunters are having board wars over dabbling since pistoleers can dabble into the bounty hunter line for the speed increases, and when people die in PvP they see Novice Bounty Hunter title and cry NERF! =/
Dabbling is fine, it helps make unique characters and provides you with skills and abilities that you want. Its even ok if those skills you get make you a better player in combat.
The trouble comes when a handful of classes provide their best abilities within one or two trees each. Its really okay for this to happen within the novice professions, but when you look at CH and see 2 trees, BH with one or two trees, commando with one tree, TKA with a couple, and a few others that provide all of the real core abilities of that class. When you get 90% or more of what a class provides in real benefits from doing less than half of that class is when we have troubles.

Well put. I personally hate dabbling if you have not mastered your main profession. As it stands, I will be able to grab CH3/3/0/0 with my Master Commando, and I am out of points. But I think teh Holocron hunts have put a silent death to alot of dabbling.
Here is my opinion about pistoleers dabbling in BH, why the hell not?! Unless you really want to be another profession along with pistoleer, why not get BH pistol? Is all about building the strongest character possible for these people. So what do you expect players to do? You present them with a method to become faster and stonger (better specials), and you expect them to say "nah, i dont wanna get it because i wont be able to master all of BH." Everyone has the same skills available to them and everyone has 250 pts. So dont whine other player's skills should be nerfed when everyone has the same oppuritunity.
Really, everyone has a good point, but try not to be too hard on neither the Masters who are upset at dabblers or people who like to dabble, really its not their fault the system now is the way it is, it is a general fault in the combat/levelling system.IMO, the whole 'dabbling vs. master' thing is a symptom of a greater problem: The trees of most the Elite and Hybrid combat professions are not balanced/working properly yet. For example, the reason a Flame IV Commando is as effective as a Master Commando lies in the fact that at least 2 of the branch of the Commando tree do not work properly. All in all, dabbling a little is good and fine; it helps round out your character...however, the system wherein the taking of 1 or 2 branches of a tree makes a dabbler about as effective as a Master of the same profession is not right either, it leads to undue frustration and feelings of 'I spent all those skill points I could have spent on something else for THIS?' on the part of the Master. On the flip side though, skills should not be arrayed in such a manner as to make it pointless to learn a profession unless you are going to master it, that leads to undue frustration on the part of those who like to 'make their own hybrid character' , if you will, by mixing and matching a little of this and that.Pretty much it also comes down to: Should a dabbler be able to keep up with/take out a master in the same profession if both sides are using skills from thatONE profession andONLY that one profession? In most cases,NO. However, should a dabbler be able to keep up with/take down a master in the same profession if both sides are allowed to use ALL the skills at their disposal? YES,there should be at least a decent shot of this happening.
Sadly, this is not the case the case in the current environment and it leads to aggravation on both sides of the fence.
