Thread: Can I use Commando for self-defense?

I'm a shipwright with the occasional taste for grouping. I also like to clear spots of the occasional bad guy to lay down a harvey. Can I take master commando and be able to do some of this low end stuff? Are there enough non-aoe weapons that do any damage worth mentioning?

I think I would avoid Commando if you seek a selfdefence addon for a crafter, to be honest the best thing to get then is Pistoleer.


You get many nice attacks like stoppingshot and other specials that can keep prey away from you while you hammer at them. Also it will cost alot less skillpoints to get then Commando. Maybe free up some skillpoints which you can use elsewhere


I will ofcourse welcome any new Commando to these forums but I just dont think clearing hostile critters around your harvies is best done with a flamethrower hehe

The terms "Defense" and "Commando" are usually never used in the same sentence when positively commenting on Commando.

Well, pre-CU at any rate. Defense wise we're average, nothing special (in either we're tanks or we die within seconds, as it was pre-CU).

However, none of us would recomend using commando in a crafter hybrid, or as a sole "try out combat" precisely for this reason: We do not have specials, hence we do not generate damage to even come close to non-damage dealers.

Ironic for a damage dealer right? Well its true, we're short changed on damage considerably to the point where we almost require to be in a ranged template (our weapons only "power-up" via DoTs, or state effects - weak ones too...our "Lots of utility", where as other professions have the utility AND damage), slightly shortchanged on modifiers (we're short by a few points compared to other ranged professions), and because of our AoE...we draw lots of aggro, so you're going to need the defenses and damage that a ranged template can offer you so you won't die every 10 minutes.

Get inside a ranged template however (especially a 250 pt one)? You're pretty well off despite grenades and AoE, but without (sole Master Commando, melee hybrid, or crafter hybrid) its not a great choice.
