How can I get into the test server? Last time I tried it screwed up my SWG files and I had to reinstall. Im such a n00b.

At the launcher screen, after you have enterd you login/password, there's a "Testcenter" button at the bottom. Press it and it will ask if you want to install it in the default location, say no or it will install in the same folder as you Live install, then you can specify where it will install the TC copy.
This is how it was for me, if it differs, don't blame me
