Ok I have always been a Fencer / Rifle, but always wanted to be a commando, now with the CU, I figured that it would be cool to be Rifle, yet have the heavy weapon abilities of the Commando, I wanted to be a true damage dealer.
Upon testing though, I found out that while Commando enhances my weapon skills for Rifle, it is rather dissapointing in the damage dealing department. Yes I get the Flame thrower and Acid cannon, which is nice, but besides that the DPS and damage types for the rest of the Commando weapons were pretty similiar to Rifles.
For example, if I want to take out a Turrett, I am just as good if not better doing it with a T21 from Rifle. To me it seems like Commando shoudl really be the best at killing things like Turrets and such, with no blast damage, that doesn't seem true.
I really like the thought of Rifle / Commando and hope I am missing something, any thoughts would help.

The role of the Commando is to "kick ass and chew bubble gum....and we're all out of bubble gum."
Actually- at the moment Commando adds heavy weapon damage to specials you pick up from other profs- mostly. Seeing as you (a rifleman) are THE damage dealing prof- yeah, you might not see that much of the flavor Commando adds.
It's for reasons like that, that I haven't seriously considered adding Pistoleer to my Smuggler template- as I think I would benefit more from strengthening my weaknesses over adding to my strengths.
Remember though- Commandot also has some powerful grenades that take very little action to deploy. Not to mention the majority of them have great chances at applying states AND they would add AOE damage, where rifleman damage is more potent but singular.
In the end, I would consider your playstyle over everything else first and build your temp according to that. If you like the appeal of Heavy Weapons- well, there is only one place your gonna get them.

Thx for the answer. That is exactly why I wanted Commando, I wanted the big hitting damage, instead of defense. Was trying to make an all offense with little damage, going out in a blaze of glory type character.
Commando certainly fits that mold. So I figured Commando and Rifleman would be king of the offense dealing. Yet like you said, the 2 more parrallel each other vice stacking. Unless I am missing something again, which is quite possible.
I would probably get more benefit from going Pistols or Carbines with commando, but my first love has always been rifles. Mixing Commando with them really apealed to me, yet doesn't seem to augment RIfles much

We're now from an Anti-Tank role (which was never successful), to Doomsday on the battlefield of a role.
As long as AoE isn't 11% of initial damage to secondary targets, we'll fit this role quite nicely on the battlefield as we'll be able to knock the living bajeezus out of an entire platoon of enemy soldiers...hehe...
Now, if AoE isn't bugged and that reduction in splash damage IS intended. Then damn, we got a problem.
Edit:
Rifleman can do immense damage from a far, set up ambushes, and basically snipe
Swordsman can do great damage to rooted ranged targets (or other melee forces) and do the damage in your face
Commando, can do the damage both a far, and up close n personal...and gives you a nice parting gift of roasting and being blinded/KDed/etc.

Thx for the responses, I am going to stick with my plan. Hopefully the issues will work out and the difference between Rifle and Commando becomes more clear.
Instead of just snooping on the commando boards, I'll be posting more, probably noob questions
