I had some free time and our guide needed some updating. I figured I might as well do it. All props to Ivoni for the original guide which has done us proudly for so long.

Introduction

Commando is an incredible profession. It is the most unique of all the combat professions in SWG. No one can kill bunnies as fast as us. No one else pays 1k per shot with half their weapons. No one else can incap themselves with the damage from their own weapon. Seriously though, Commandos have alot of restrictions and nuances which make this profession a unique play from all the others. Consider yourself warned.

Races

There isn't much to say here. There isn't a bad race to be as a commando. It can be argued the races with state defenses are better but really, it's all in how you want to play the game. Plus, wookies are getting armor soon which nullifies their disadvantage. Everythings pretty much equal. Choose what makes you happy.

Basics

Novice Commando is a pain to reach as it takes not only training unarmed 4 but it takes 40,000combat xp to attain. Translated to normal xp that's 400,000 of any other weapon's xp. There area coupleways to go about getting your 40k combat xp which are:

  1. If you choose to master medic, scout, or artisan along with commando, choose your best weapon from mastering marksman and start blasting away. Also, go to a weaponsmith and ask for a crate or two of c12 grenades. Make sure to specifyc12 grenades and not c22. c12's are the only grenade type you can use before novice commando. The reason I say get the nades is because they grant pure combat xp. The xp acts just like any other weapon xp. Example: You kill a durni with a pistol and receive 120 pistol xp and 12 combat xp. If you kill the durni with a c12 you receive 120 combat xp and 12 combat xp. No, this isn't a bug.

  2. If you choose to master another combat profession along with commando, I recommend refraining from using c12's as it will slow you down in the long run. Just kill, kill, kill using your prefered weapon until you have that 400k weapon xp and 40k combat xp.

Really, the fastest way to gain your combat xp is using the c12's. Whether that is the best way is determined by your specific situation.

Novice

You finally made it to novice! Congratulations! You feel all-powerful now, invincible with your high powered weapons. The server gods look at you and smile. So you think anyway. Lets get one thing straight. The server gods are hateful and mean spirited. Give them no respect just fear them for their evil ways.

As a novice you have a choice of three non-consumable weapons: the Launcher Pistol aka. Lag Cannon, Flamethrower, and Heavy Acid Rifle aka. Green Flamer Clone.

  • Launcher Pistol - The launcher pistol despite and inspite of it's causing lag due to insane amounts of partical effects is a good weapon. It has blast damage, is only a little slower than most pistols, and if it's a good one, does more damage than most pistols(not talking krayt enhanced pistols here!).It's downfalls are as follows. It has no skill mods in the commando line. It uses standard pistol mods and as such you have tolearn pistolleer skills to better the mods it uses. Also, it has no specials in the commando line. These youhave to get fromeither pistolleer or smuggler. However you decide to go about using the LP,this is your weapon until you hit flamethrower specialization 3.

  • Flamethrower - This is still the best weapon in the commando's arsenal even with heat resistance actually working now. The specials apply a dot which still stacks though the damage is less than it used to be. It has high damage, slow speed, and is inaccurate until you train the flamethrower specialization 3. It's still less accurate than all the other combat professions weapons at master but that's a whole other can of worms. Another thing of note, all 4 specials for the flamer have a max range of 16m and have a hella long recycle time. Be prepared to take alot of damage.

  • Heavy Acid Rifle - This weapon used to be borked beyond use. However, last patch the skill mods for it were finally fixed making itatleastusable. It's effectiveness still leaves a lot to be desired but that is also a whole other can of worms. The har is basically a less powerful clone of the flamethrowerwith no dotonly it does acid damage instead. It also has the same restrictions as the flamer: up to 64m for a normal shot but only 16m for a special.Again, you won't want to bother with it until the 3rd box in the har skill tree.

Basically, as a novice just use the LP until you hit either the 3rd har skill box or the 3rd flamethrower skill box. Then, just as you've been doing this entire time, kill anything that moves. You'll get most of the combat xp you'll need for the field tactics tree by getting your xp for the other 3 trees. You should be a few thousand combat xp short of field tactics 4 but you can use the grenade trick using more powerful grenades this time around.

Master

You've done it! You've mastered commando! Congratulations again! Now what? In celebration, have your weaponsmith make you a stack of proton grenades with an emphasis on damage. Take your protons and toss them at anything making sure you are right at the grenade's ideal range. Enjoy the show

Complimentary Professions

Commando is a hybrid profession which means it takes alot more skill points to master than an elite combat profession. Once a master, you will have the skill points left to either master a starting profession such as medic or scout but no more. However, if you choose an elite profession you already meet the requirements for such as smuggler or teras kasi, then you will have the skill points to master that profession as well as have enough skill points to pick up novice in any of the starter professions. All the professions you have this option with are:

  • Smuggler

  • Rifleman

  • Pistolleer

  • Carbineer

  • Teras Kasi

All those if master along with commando leave you with the fifteen skill points necessary for a novice box in any starting profession. Another option which takes up those remaining skill points is to master any of the other three elite brawler professions. Fencer, Swordsman, and Pikeman are all masterable along with commando but the four skill boxes required for those use the remaining skill points left after a duel mastering.

Conclusion

Commando is an incredible profession with alot of potential to be something entirely magnificent. As it is now, we are only a shadow of our potential but it is my hope, some patch in the future will bring about a redemption and usher us to a glory previously unknown to our humble profession. Until that time however, this profession is only good at low to medium level pve. If pvp is what you want to do, I regrettably must point you in another direction. If you just want to be a commando for the hell of it, you'recrazy and you'll get along great in the community

Appendix A

Flamer - A couple people have stated they've used they're flamer from novice or started using it at flame specialization 2. If you want to use a flamer from novice on, by all means, go right ahead. It's your game after all. However, the reason I said flame specialization 3 is because of my own experience. I used my flamer from flame 1 on. Not soley my flamer but I did use it. I found it to be too slow and too inaccurate to be of much use. That being said, all flamers aren't created equal. You're flamers accuracy depends on how it was crafted as well as your skill mods. It's the same with all the weapons. My flamers are more focused toward speed and damage than accuracy, which may very well be why I didn't have the easiest time using my flamer before flame 3. If you find your flamer to work all right at low levels then use it. It's definitely better than the lp if you don't have pistolleer. If you do decide to use the flamer on up thorugh the flame tree, I'ld recommend using /aim before using a any of the flame specials. The wait is long enough you don't want to miss.

Skill tapes - There are skill tapes in the game called Heavy Weapons Speed and Heavy Weapons Accuracy. These are kickbacks from beta and serve no purpose. They don't work. Don't waste money on them. There are also Thrown Weapon Accuracy and possibly Thrown Weapon Speed tapes. These do work. It's also my theory if you collect enough and use them, grenades may be somewhat viable for use in at least pve combat.

Grenades - Something I should have mentioned about grenades but forgot is; They aren't useful for killing creatures. They're too slow, use too much ham, and are too inaccurate even at master. If you use the c12's to gain novice, just use them on lairs or you will waste them.

Heavy Weapons - I didn't talk about these at all and I realise I should have. These things suck. They have horrible accuracy, are incredibly slow, force you to kneelling to use them, use tons of ham, cost exorbant amounts of credits, have limited charges, and currently can not be used indoors. While the devs are changing the heavy weapons to be usable indoors in the near future, they still have all the other shortcomings. Unless you have credits to waste, don't bother with these.

In my opinion, you can use the FT in flame2. At flame2, you get exactly as much accuracy as you do with pistols 4, in my opinion, it's enough for me, but different people have different tastes

Excellent Post. I'm quite happy that you did this as it is very informative for aspiring commandos. Only thing I would change in your post is the flamer is the way to go, all the way. I started commando with the flamer and have used it all the way, or so far as I'm 2/2/4/1. The XP for heavy weapons also goes very fast, I would recomend getting buffs and taking quenker/savage quenker missions on Dant, as these go very fast and give around 3k XP per kill. Hope my small contribution helps .

Great guide. Personally I like the heavy weapons, though. When they hit, they do an immense amount of damage. They are also very useful when supporting a group.

Hey, if you've got the credits to burn and want to use them, awesome. I've got a crate of each heavy weapon on order from my weaponsmith right now since I have the money to burn. Like you said, "When the hit, they do an immense amount of damage." The key there is WHEN THEY HIT which isn't often enough for me to justify the credit burn as anything more than a waste. Hopefully, since we seem to be getting a little bit of attention these days, the devs will at least make the heavy weapons easier to make. That would drop their price and I could change my point of view from "a waste of credits" to "an affordable support weapon." Until then, though, I don't forsee my opinion of heavy weapons changing.
