Short and simple, kill things I guess your question really is what do I need to use to get heavy weapons XP?

If I remember correctly you only have a couple of options of weapons at novice, the launcher pistol and the correlian destroyer. I used the Correlian Destroyer up until incendiary weapons 1 which got me the basic rocket launcher. This did until incendiary 3 where the flamethrower came into play AoE DoT fun all the way \o/
