Thread: Combat Revamp Question for Garvin

Greetings Garvin, and thank you for the role you serve your community. My question (and I understand if you can not answer it) is as follows:
Many correspondants are stating that the combat balance will be successful, totally rebuilding the combat system and each profession has its role. However, (at least from my perspective) the "problems" with the current combat system isn't necessarily professions (even though many do have internal problems) not balancing themselves but rather profession dabbling. Will the combat balance take into account profession dabblers, or will the sandbox only deal with profession vs profession?
Thank you for your time,
This is a great question but also very hard to answer without you seeing all the docs...So, unfortunately for now, you'll have to deal with a general response (no specifics)...
Currently in game people are TKA/Fence/Swordsmen...or they are Rifleman/Pistoleers/TKA...etc...They are bits and pieces from different professions to make a whole template...I believe the original intent of "dabbling" was for players to take a profession, then enhance that profession via picking up other professions or pieces there of...
Look at Commandos...currently we pick up other professions like TKA...But in many cases we find we are using our TKA abilities more then our Commando abilities...The current dabbling system creates "Mutt" templates with typically one direction stronger then the other, but not much working together to enhance the primary beyond defense stacking typically.
Part of the revamp is really focusing on each profession having a "specific" role...The way they've set things up, I believe people will go back to the original purpose of picking a profession, then grabbing what they desire from other professions...Kind of like you are "shopping" for what you want...more offense abilities, or more defense capabilities...
Do me a favor...When TH starts posting the Combat Revamp docs, ask me this question again and I think you'll like the answer...especially when he posts the "profession specifics" docs...There is a HUGE change that is coming that will make what I just said above make a ton more sense...You will all be Commandos first and foremost no matter what other professions you dabble (if Commando is your choice)...Anything you dabble in will be to make your Commando better...

Oh man i jsut hope i dont have to give up being tkm to play commando. Dont get me wrong i love commando but i love hand to hand jsut as much. To me im not a master commando and a master teris kasi im a true soldier. i have a vast amount of weapons to use and if needed i can stand toe to toe with nothing but my good looks and a stupid looking razor blade. thats not a unarmed weapon its a knife come on
Well if it helps to alleviate some concern, I know what's coming and I'm keeping my M.Commando/TKM...
I'm also considering a M.Commando/Smuggler/Rifleman combo for another character...might switch Rifleman to Pistoleer though...
