Hey all, new commando here! Anyways I was thinking of ways to augment my commando skills and while going through the trees of some other professions I got to wondering...

Which is more benificial overall.. the trees with the mitigations in them(melee/ranged mitigation 1,2), or the trees with the raw defense bonuses.. (melee/ranged defense +'s)? Points are starting to tighten up, and I'm wondering if taking a mitigation tree would be more or less useful than a bonus tree.

(This is all assuming I don't have the points to master the profession, therefore taking mitigiation 3's out of the picture)

Also, if you take both trees I assume that your defense against that kind of attack would be much greater?

mitigation reduces damage range by 20%, 40%, and 60% respectively.
The minimum damage stays the same.
Hence, mitigation isn't very good against weapons with tight damage ranges like DXR6's, and even mitigation 3 only saves you about 10% of the damage.
On the other hand it rocks against weapons with huge ranges... Laser carbines and rifles do under 50% damage against you if you have ranged mit 3.

Not getting hit is probably more important then getting between a 5-40% damage reduction for mitigation 2.

The usefullness of ranged and melee defense mods... I consider negligable... I've never been able to prove to myself they make much of a difference.
