Thread: Garvin, do you still believe this?

Remember that the money they pull in isn't ALL profits...much of it goes to pay salaries...some I'm sure goes to Lucas...some goes to maintenance...etc...anyone in anytype of programming field can tell you that "new hardware" usually translates into easily over 10K (likely more)...Buracracy usually ties up ordering it as permissions are needed which involve detailed proposals to justify the need over using existing components...there is also delivery time on said hardware (they don't craft the hardware themselves)...set up time...testing of new hardware...fixing the bugs in the new hardware...more testing time...all this on top of upkeep on existing hardware/bugs/issues...They may even pull hardware from other areas which could lead to all types of other issues (which is why I personally feel like server issues are typically related to "something more" going on in the backgroun...i.e. that Alpha testing could be close).
So I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that "hardware" isn't a very vaild issue...I'd be willing to accept that over programming issues personally (since they've had a fairly long time to get the programming done)...

I hope they arent planning on testing (alpha, much less beta) the CU on anything other than the exact same hardware that the live servers are on...
Thats nearly like using weapons that are in no way comparable to the ones that are on live, or crafting said weapons with anything other than resources that are available on live....

Last I heard they are trying (I heard this awhile back) to set up an "exact" environment as on live...they may even dupicate a current server like they've done in the past (did this with the Jedi tests)...That's why they have to set up a Server that can (1) handle the stress of having that much data & (2) be able to take the stress load of tons of people coming in for Beta (which I'm still thinking they are going to cram in as many folks as possible)...None of this is for sure as it's just my own speculation on what I've heard chatted about here and there, but I'm confident that they'll do things similar in set up to the Jedi Revamp testing, but on a much larger scale to accomindate a much later audience...
They'll also likely do some other things like they did with the Jedi Revamp testing with Blue Frogs, Quick Re-Spawns, and designated PvP areas as well as set up test scenerios that they want us to run...Beyond that, all of our Sandbox testers already have their set plans on what they need to get tested straight out of the gate regarding Commandos. It's my hope that when the NDA is lifted, we'll be able to take the results of the tests we ran and present them to you all (or at the very least, give you all the data as you enter Beta so you can build on it)...What we compile will eventually be used to rebuild our Commando Guide/FAQ.
At least no combat related event?
May I remind you that we have the only weapons that are banned because of lag-fest?
Today, no PvP group will accept me, unless it's for a demo team, and I have to stick to marksman stuff...

I recently heard rumblings that it's hardware that's causing the delays (ever notice that when testing is about to start, we see server issues pop up more frequently? It's my guess that's them "moving" hardware around and having an "opps" )...We saw the same thing around the time of JTL testing...and around Jedi Revamp testing...lots of server issues. The fact that we've seen a few server issues pop up lately that "feel" hardware related is another reason I keep saying that I believe testing will start any day now...
Ok. The "we don't have the hardware" is a reason (excuse?) that I have a lot of trouble accepting. They pull down just how much money MONTHLY from the subscribers? They like us to believe that there are several hundred thousand paying players. If it's ONLY 100,000, then that is about $1,500,000 per MONTH. They can BUY new hardware for this CRITICAL purpose. And it's hard to imagine that a full server set up would be necessary for the less than 275 players that will be participating in the Alpha testing.
SOE has invested in new developers by hiring. They have acknowledged this is THE priority for SOE. They have had MONTHS (I'll be generous and call it 3 months, or $4.5m in fees collected) to get the equipment in place to support the Alpha testing. If they have failed to do so, it's inexcusable.
So while the "hardware isn't ready yet" is a nice plausible sounding reason, it's something else, like the code isn't actually ready yet. They aren't that incompetent.
