Thread: Damage Mitigation!

There are THREE main types of ways to reduce damage. This is how they work.

1) Mitigation. This reduces the max damage of attacks against you by changing the damage range of an attacker's weapon. My weapon does 100-200 damage. Level 3 mitigation reduces the damage range, in this case 100, by 60%, in this case to 40. This weapon now does only 100-140 damage against my target. All mitigations always work against all targets, regardless of -any- other factors. (Note that because a large percentage of TKMs damage is based on their Unarmed Damage mod and not the weapon, Mitigaton is not very effective against them.

2) Toughness. Only melee professions have this, and it only counts towards melee attacks. As a TKM, I have 57 Unarmed Toughness. This means that when fighting unarmed, and only when fighting unarmed, I reduce all damage from melee attacks by 57%. MSwordsmen reduce all melee damage against them by 43%, etc.

3) Dodge/Counterattack/Block. These are weapon specific. Dodge gives you a chance to completely avoid an attack, but only when wielding a Pistol or One-Handed Weapon. Counterattack has the same effect but only when wielding Carbines or Two-Handed Swords. Block reduces the damage taken by 50% bu only when holding a Rifle or Pike. All characters have very small chances to Dodge/Counterattack/Block when using any weapon, but only one of these increases through a profession for each weapon-type.

If you're a MCommando/TKM, you will always take the same damage from ranged attacks, regardless of weapon held. There is no toughness that applies against ranged attacks, your ranged mitigation works always, and your dodge/block/counterattack modifier is the same, i.e. zero.

If you are hit by a melee attack, you will always benefit from the Melee Mitigation from TKM, you still don't have dodge/block/counterattack, but if you have VKs or nothing equipped then you benefit from the TKM's 57% Toughness damage reduction. Make sense?

Nope I disagree, I tested vs a canyon Krayt yesterday and when I equipped a ranged weapon I was taking more of a beating than when going unarmed. Melee or ranged mitigation only activates when equpping the weapon for that profession the mitigation level is certified in.

Spuky last time i checked no weapon (unarmed)counted as a tk weapon so you would still get the toughness bonus but mitigation always works no matter what

ya ... thats diff between unarmed and ranged .. i dont mean to be a prck but your test is flawed: ( ... it has been tested by me and many other people .. mitigation is everpresent .. toughness is not and IMHO toughness isa bigger deal than mitigation anyway so ......
