First of, the M16A2 rifle we use in RL military is a carbine. Carbines are lightweight RIFLES with shorter barrels, used primary for ASSAULTS. Like the M4 Carbine, etc. Rifles have longer barrels.
So if you're looking to get an assault rifle, try picking up carbineer. While it'sa good idea for the commando profession, use these terms as a guide to what you're seeking.
The flamethrower is already considered the uber weapon of the profession. Perhaps a cold weapon or some sort of electricity weapon would be more beneficial over an assault rifle.
Think futuristic, this is the star wars universe. Have you seen a ranged weapon in the movies that ever didn't resemble a carbine, rifle, or pistol? No, no assault rifles. Because assault rifles are carbines.

i am all for commandos getting a line dedicated to pre exsiting weapons like the bounty hunter does. I think a carbine ,pistol line similar to a bounty hunters would be awesome.

With all due respect...The modern (20th/21st Century) definition of a carbine is a long arm that fires pistol ammunition. The M16/A1/A2 fires rifle ammunition and is therefore a rifle. The M4, while using the same upper/lower reciever configuration fires pistol ammunition and is therefore a carbine.
No. The M4 IS the M16. Search it on google. They use the same 5.56 nato cartridge. Type M4 carbine, and look how closely it resembles the m16.Its just shorter. The m4-a1 is a full auto version. The M4 CAN BE configured to fore a pistol cartidge, but its not common to find them.
A Sub machine is a long firearm that uses pistol ammunition. An MP5 is an SMG. An HK UMP is an SMG. The uzi, mac-10, MP40, FNp-90 are all SMG's. They all use pistol ammunition.

M4A1 and the much more commonly used M4A2 fire 5.56 NATO.
It is 1.3 pounds lighter than the M16A2 (till the rail system came to us) and not quite 10" shorter than the M16A2 with the butstock collapsed.
It is a Carbine.

I'll stand corrected on that then. When you said M4, I was thinking of the 9mm carbine using the same upper/lower reciever configs as the AR15 derived weapons. Perhaps one of you can correct me on the nomenclature of that weapon. Trouble with this whole carbine/rifle definition issue is that manufacturers, gun enthusiasts and civil law are going to have differing positions on the definitions. I still would not consider a 5.56mm weapon based on the M16 to be a carbine no matter how short you cut it. The manufacturer may still call it a carbine and it's military nomenclature may still state carbine. I've seen a 5-shot revolver that used 5.56mm ammo; talk about an item to confuse definitions!
That said, we could say that for the purposes of SWG, the Commando profession could use a kinetic damage weapon with similar characteristics to the FT. Since the term "Assault Rifle" seems to get on nerves and may be misleading, we might re-name this proposed weapon. Assault Gun, Assault Cannon, Auto-Rifle, Auto-Cannon, etc. Similar speed and damage to a FT without the burn specials but perhaps with a KD/Dizzy special. Hey, how about we stick a bayonet on the end and allow persons with Pikeman skill to use specials with it? Ok, you can stop laughing now...

Okay. I'm thinking about this and it is starting to irk me. "Obviously you're not in the military". That is arrogant and annoying and insulting. I might point out that if your icon is female you are not combat arms. . . . if you ARE combat arms. Well. I won't go there.
My brother could bore you to death with details on weapons and equipment. He was never in the Marines like I was. I'm more of the opinion that you can brag about the caliber, rate of fire and damage all you want. If you don't hit what you are shooting at your wasting your breath. (Kind of like Commando's with our HAR, grenades and heavy weapons, but I digress which isn't the point of this post).
Please refrain from such immature comments. My brother wasn't a Marine but I would trust him at myback any day. He is a LOT better than most of the soldiers that I knew (and some Marines)and much deadlier than any rear echeleon pogue.
Don't get me wrong. I've got a lot of respect for REMF's. I don't tell them how to cook the chow, pay my check, and get me my bullets. It is probably best they not advise others on the fine art of combat.
Let's not jump the gun and assume that because we have "Real life experience" we know it all.
I remember so fondly a "Navy Seal" telling me he was a sniper and hedidn't know what tracers are.
I would like to thank the gentleman who mentioned the M4. That is what I meant, the CAR-15 is the civilian version I believe.
Here's a website on real life tactics and combat if you are interested. www.military-sf.com . Nope, next to none of it applies to StarWars it applies to real life.
Good luck and may the force be with ya.

AR-15 is a civilian version...I think,
Well, Thiostan said it best. We can talk about what makes a gun a carbine and what makes it a rifle all day long. But if we cant land shots with it, it might as well be a potato gun.
Now. We speak of having an assault rifle / carbine implimented. Why Carbines? Well for starters they are ( statisticly ) the middle grounds of the ranged combat proffesions. Right now rifleman are out of wack with thier speed mod so carbines cant realy be "middle" ground of the balance between speed and damage.
I dont think the commando community is asking in mass for another hard hitting but slow weapon. I can saftly say that what we would like is something similiar to rifles and carbines. Best of both worlds if you may, but not so much as to have an advantage so big that people would nerf hoard our boards like people do with CM.
All we ask is for a ranged weapon thats not a pistol with ranged specials. Enough said about it. Its anoying when people stick their nose where it doesnt belong.
About that 5.56x49 pistol.... well thats insanity.

When was the last time you saw a 5 foot fish walking around on a desert planet with no water around? Obviously this isn't real life. Give us an assault rifle.

It's weird. When I see those words on the screen "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" I'm thinking "ooh a long time ago".

Those were my exact thoughts when I read this... those are very poor words to try to start any kind of a decent discussion. Words such as those, put people on the defensive right from the start.
